1908년 唐津 小蘭芝島에서의 義兵의 抗日戰

The Battles of Righteous Army in Sonanjido(小蘭芝島) against Japanese Police Force

The concrete aspect of Righteous Army in Sonanjido, which was transmitted only by word of mouth, was verified academically by the excavation of relevant references such as the report of Japanese Police Force. The battle of Righteous Army in Sonanjido with Japanese Police Force broke out on March 15 in 1908. The Japanese Police Force dispatched from Hongju Police landed in Sonanjido, driving the captured Korean fishing boat around 6 in the morning. The Righteous Army combated fiercely with Japanese Police Force for about 9 hours. However, the Righteous Army could not overcome the inferiority of fire power, and the Army was thrust to the edge of shore in the east. As a result, there were 36 casualties in this battle. The 5 righteous soldiers who struggled inside the cave in north of the island also died in battle. More than 50 soldiers were missing. Japanese Police Force committed an act of brutality by pouring petroleum on food taken away from the Righteous Army, and burning the food. Through this study, the resistances and sacrifices of righteous soldier, Won-sik Hong(洪元植), and his anonymous soldiers were historically proven to occur in Sonanjido. At the same time, we could certify for the first time that Sonanjido was the main base of Righteous Army’s activity in the Naepo(內浦) area after 1906, and the nearby sea of Sonanjido was the major arena for the operations of Righteous Army as well. In addition, we could validate the brutality of Japanese Police Force to the Righteous Army. Japanese Police Force slaughtered sailors and wounded soldiers. The history of Righteous Army in Sonanjido might have disappeared in history but became alive. The purpose of this study is very meaningful in that the history reminds us of the fact once again; history has ups and downs, nonetheless it can never be vanished.
