According to anthropological theory and research methods, the relationship between Mongolia and China during the coronavirus outbreak was declared a state of emergency by both governments. The “donation of 30,000 sheep” was considered a key example to explain why. Although the event has been interpreted from different perspectives by academics and the general public in both Mongolia and China, the main explanation given in this article is a “contribution” by Mongolia to its “friend” who has been plagued by the epidemic. It was an act of defending one’s independence and position through “donations”. This action also reflected the “traditional” practice of Mongolians to “give away livestock”. However, the most interesting aspect is that this is not a one-off event, and the first part of the article focuses on the fact that the progress of recognizing the independence of the two countries during World War II also went through this kind of “contribution”. The second part discusses that the “sheep donation” has strengthened the relationship and brought it to a new level, as can be seen from subsequent cooperation. In this regard, the conclusion focuses on the fact that Mongolian-Chinese relationship is more “contribution-based” than relationship to other countries.
