지난 100년 동안 제주도는 일제강점기, 제주4.3 한국전쟁, 새마을운동, 관광산업화 등을 겪었다. 그 과정에서 많은 외지인이 제주도민으로 편입되고, 외지문화가 유입되면서 생활문화가 바뀌고 있고 제주도민의 의식도 많이 변하였다. 특히 최근에 제주가 국제관광지로 되면서 관광객이 밀려들고, 많은 이들이 제주도로 귀농· 귀촌· 이주하면서 제주다움과 정체성도 변하고 있다. 제주도민의 정체성은 자의식, 언어, 의식주, 신앙, 혼례 및 장례 등의 생활문화에서 드러난다. 여기서는 2014년 4월 제주도에 5년 이상 거주하는 성인 300명을 표본추출 하여 제주인의 기준, 언어생활, 의식주생활, 신앙생활, 혼례 및 장례문화 등에 대한 의식조사를 바탕으로 제주도민의 자의식과 생활문화 의식을 살펴보았다. 제주적인 것이 모두 다 좋고 훌륭한 것은 아니다. 우리는 제주적인 것들 가운데 보편적 가치를 지닌 것은 지키고, 오늘날 우리의 삶에 족쇄가 되는 것은 과감하게 버려야 한다. 여기서 중요한 것은 겉으로 드러난 문화현상보다는 그 문화가 생겨나게 된 배경과 거기에 함축된 의미를 파악하여 오늘날에도 유효하도록 계승하거나 변용하는 것이다.
During the past 100 years Jeju islanders suffered Japanese occupation, Jeju April 3 Incident, Korean War, Saemaul Undong (New Community Movement), tourism industrialization and so on. In the process, many outsiders are incorporatied into the Jeju people, other cultures are introduced, and varied cultural life has changed a lot of Jeju Islanders consciousness. Recently holding Jeju island as an international tourist destination many mainlanders are migrating to Jeju island, Jejuness and Jeju islanders identity are also changing. Jeju Islanders identity is evident in the culture of life, such as self-consciousness, Jeju dialect, food, clothing, shelter, faith, weddings and funerals etc.. Here, in April 2014 sampling the adult 300 people living more than five years in Jeju island, Jeju islanders’ cultural life and consciousness are examined. Jejuness is not all of it good and great. We should keep it with the universal values of Jeju things, and throw away the shackles among Jeju ones in our lives. It is important to understand the implications and the cultural background than a cultural phenomenon, and to inherit or transform to be valid today.
