현공 윤주일의 <제주선경가(濟州仙景歌)> 교정 연구

A Corrective Study on Hyunkong Yun Jooil s <Jejuseonkyeong-ga>

현공 윤주일(1895-1969)은 한국전쟁 중에 제주도에 머무는 동안 <제주선경가>를 지었다. 현공은 <제주선경가>에서 그동안 유학지들이 도가적 이상향으로 구성한 영주섭경과 제주의 자연, 역사 지명 둥을 불교적 관점에서 새로운 의미를 부여하면서 제주섬이 불국정토임을 천명하고 있다. 제주선경가>는 한국전쟁 직후인 1953년 10월 광주에서 출간된 『불교강연집』에 실려 있지만 제주사람들에게 알려진 것은 그로부터 29년이 지난 1982년 7월 「제주신문」을 통해서이다. 「제주신문」에 보도된 <제주선경가>는 여러 가지 오류들이 많고, 잘못된 내용들이 진실인 것처럼 이미 널리 유포되어 있어서 그에 대한 교정이 필요하다. 현공의 <제주선경가>는 적어도 세 차례 이상 수정되었다. 재판 『불교강연집』에 실린 <제주선경가>는 현공의 생전에 교정된 것이고, 현공 사후에 제자들이 발간한 『현공윤주일대법사설법집』과 『불교강설』에 실린 <제주선경가>는 제주지역 포교를 위해 현지인들이 사용하는 제주어를 일부 수용하여 대중들에게 좀 더 가까이 다가가려는 현공의 취지를 살리지 못하고 있다는 이쉬움이 있다. 이 글에서는 현공의 <제주선경가>들과 「제주신문」에 보도된 <제주선경가>를 검토하여 시비를 논해보고자 한다.

Hyunkong Yun Jooil(1895~1969) wrote <Jejuseonkyeong-ga> in Jeju during the Korean War. In <Jejuseongyeong-ga> Hyunkong reinterpreted Yeongjusipkyeong from the Buddhist point of view, gave the Buddhist meaning to nature, history and place names of Jeju island. It was first published in Gwangju in 1953, but was reported very differently in Jeju on the newspaper in 1982. Still false information about it has been prevailing in Jeju. <Jejuseonkyeong-ga> was revised at least three times. The second edition of <Jejuseongyeong-ga> was modified by Hyunkong. Therefore, it can be called authentic, but this also needs to be re-corrected to match the spelling. In writing <Jejuseonkyeong-ga>, Hyunkong tried to use Jeju language familiar to the public. However his disciples did not understand his intentions. So they changed Jeju language into the standard Korean in revised <Jejuseonkyeong-ga>s. Therefore, I propose newly modified <Jejuseongyeong-ga> considering Hyunkong s intentions.
