이 연구는 언론사 사주가 해당 신문사의 편집방침에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 밝히려는 데 목적이 있다. 이 목적을 달성하기 위해 제주지역 3개 일간지의 사주가 운영하는 회사와 연관된 사업과 해당 신문에 보도된 관련 뉴스의 보도태도를 비교 분석했다. 이 연구에서 분석대상이 된 사안은 부영호텔 건설, LNG 인수기지 건설, 제주일보 인쇄공장 등과 관련된 기사이다. 연구결과, 한라일보의 대주주가 운영하는 부영그룹이 건축하고 있는 ‘부영호텔’ 관련 보도기사의 제목과 리드 그리고 기사본문의 보도태도를 비교분석한 결과, 제주신보와 제민일보의 경우 이 사안에 관한 부정적인 기사가 많은 데 반면, 한라일보는 긍정적인 논조의 기사가 많았다. 그리고 제민일보의 대주주인 천마그룹이 운영하는 LPG 사업과 경쟁 관계에 있는 ‘LNG 인수기지 건설’ 관련 보도기사의 경우 제주신보와 한라일보는 긍정적인 기사의 비율이 전체 평균치보다 높았지만 제민일보의 경우 3개 신문 중에 부정적인 기사 비중이 가장 높았다. 그리고 ‘제주일보 인쇄공장’의 경우 세 신문사에 보도된 기사가 한 건도 없기 때문에 비교·분석 대상에서 제외하였다. 그 대신 이 사안에 대해 제주신문에 보도된 9건의 기사를 분석했다. 분석결과 스트레이트 기사가 압도적으로 많았고, 대부분이 단일관점의 기사였다. 이 사안에 대한 보도 태도를 보면 9건의 기사 중에 중립적으로 보도된 2건을 제외하고 나머지 기사의 ‘제목과 리드’, ‘기사 전문’ 모두가 부정적이었다. 이러한 결과는 언론사의 대주주 또는 경영진이 신문사의 신문사의 뉴스 보도 결정 과정 및 편집방침에 직·간접적으로 영향을 미치고 있음을 보여준다. 따라서 도민의 무관심을 틈타 지역 언론이 범하는 사주 편들기, 자본가 편들기, 기업체 편들기, 토호세력 편들기 등과 같은 편파적인 왜곡 보도는 언론의 가치와 신뢰도를 떨어뜨리고 있으며, 지역발전을 저해하는 요소임을 인지해야 한다.
This study is mainly aimed at empirically clarifying the influence of the owners of the press on the editorial policies of the relevant newspaper companies. To that end, businesses related to companies operated by the owners of three daily newspapers in the Jeju area and the reporting attitudes for related news reported on the relevant newspapers were compared and analyzed. The issues covered in this study are articles related to the construction of the Booyoung Hotel, the construction of the LNG receiving terminal, and the printing plant of the Jeju Ilbo(The current name is Jeju Shinbo). In this study, the reporting attitudes of the titles, leads, and bodies of reported articles in relation to ‘the Booyoung Hotel’ being constructed by the Booyoung group operated by the major shareholder of the Halla Ilbo were analyzed and according to the results, the Jeju Shinbo and the Jemin Ilbo had overwhelmingly more negative articles regarding this issue while he Halla Ilbo had absolutely more articles with positive tones of argument. With regard to reported articles related to the construction of the LNG receiving terminal, which competes with the LPG project operated by the Cheonma Group, the major shareholder of the Jemin Ilbo, whereas the ratios of positive articles were higher than the overall average values in the case of Jeju Shinbo and Halla Ilbo, the ratio of negative articles was the highest in the case of Jemin Ilbo among the three newspapers. The issue related to the printing plant of the Jeju Ilbo’ was excluded from the subjects of analysis because all the three newspapers reported no article at all in relation to the issue as if they colluded with each other. Instead of the foregoing, nine articles reported on the Jeju Press were analyzed and according to the results of analysis, overwhelmingly many articles were straight and most of the articles were from a single viewpoint. On reviewing the reporting attitudes for this issue, it could be seen that all the ‘titles and leads’ and ‘full texts’ of seven out of nine articles except for two articles, which were neutral, were negative. These results concretely show the fact that major shareholders or the managements of the press directly and indirectly affect the processes of determination of news reports and editorial policies of newspaper companies. Therefore, the fact that slanted distorted reports such as those in favor of company owners, capitalists, enterprises, and local powers made by local press under assumption that ‘Do residents should not know weir deteriorate the value of reporters and the reliability of the press and make the press lose their readers should be known.
