A Study on the Optimization Maritime Shipping Network Analysis of Exported Container to the New Southern Area: A Focus on the Busan Port

Purpose - This research aims to analyze optimization shipping network between the port of Busan and the New Southern Area in order to have a comparative advantage of Korea s shipping companies in a situation of increasing in financial expenditure of ocean carriers according to enforce sulphur regulations. Design/Methodology/Approach - This paper is based on multi-objective linear programming with three objective functions: minimizing the total distance, the transportation cost and the fixed cost by ship size available to arrive in each port’s depth. The weights of the objectives in the proposed mathematical model are calculated using Entropy and data for exploring this paper were derived from homepage of shipping companies and the government authorities. Findings - The results suggest that it is more efficient new route through the transshipment port than current route when consider the three objectives and this implied high viability of the route as a container network for competitiveness of Korea’s shipping companies. The most scenarios select the Shanghai port as a hub port which has a geographical advantage, but when it considers transportation cost, the port of Tanjung Priok becomes a central port. Research Implications - This research suggests a new approach on studying relating with IMO 2020 and it also informs which port in the New Southern Area would be more applicable as a hub port if the new service by Korea’s shipping companies supply to shippers. Therefore, this study through various scenarios and sensitivity analysis would be helpful to provide services at low cost by Korea’s shipping carriers to exporters who want to reduce logistics cost.
