아키텐의 독립을 꿈꾸다: 아키텐 공 외드 1세의 좌절된 꿈

The frustrated ambition of Aquitaine duke, Eudes I

에스파냐에서 프랑크 왕국으로 팽창을 시도하는 이슬람군의 공격을 최초로 막아낸 721년 툴루즈 전투(la bataille de Toulouse)를 승리로 이끈 아키텐(Aquitaine) 공 외드(Eudes) 1세는 용맹스러운 전사이며 이슬람과의 정치적 연합을 선택하는 전략가이다. 7-8세기 프랑크 왕국의 정치적 위기와 잦은 왕위 계승은 아키텐의 프린켑스(Princeps)였던 외드 1세에게 공권 확장과 아키텐 독립의 가능성을 열어 주었다. 하지만 아키텐 공 외드 1세와 네우스트리아 왕 칠페리쿠스(Chilpericus) 2세와의 정치·군사 연합은 오히려 카롤루스 마르텔루스(Carolus Magnus)의 응징을 불러왔고 자신의 딸과 이슬람 수장 오트만(Othman)과의 결혼은 이슬람 세력의 반격과 복수를 초래했다. 결국 아키텐 공 외드 1세의 721년 툴루즈 전투의 빛나는 역사적 의미는 카롤루스 마르텔루스의 732년 투르-푸아티에 전투(la bataille de Tours-Poitiers)에게 그 자리를 양보했으며 아키텐의 독립을 끊임없이 과감하게 추진하던 아키텐 공 외드 1세는 카롤링 왕조의 개창과 더불어 비겁하고 무능한 전사로 평가되기 시작했다. 본 논문에서는 732년 투르-푸아티에 전투와 카롤루스 마르텔루스 신화에 가려진 아키텐 공 외드 1세의 정치·군사적 행보에 주목하여 카롤링 왕조 개창 과정에 관한 새로운 이해를 시도하고자 한다.

In addition, attacking Othman married to the daughter of Eudes I, the Islamic forces came to take vengeance on the Aquitaine duke. Finally, the victory of the battle of Toulouse in 721 came to be forgotten by the battle of the Tours-Poitiers in 732. Unfortunately, the Aquitaine duke, Eude I, was regarded as the incompetent and craven combatant by the carolingian chronicles who celebrated the victory of the battle of Tours-Poitiers and Carolus Martellus. In the article, it aims to examine the interesting approach to the opening of the carolingain dynasty focusing the political and military steps of Eudes I.
