  • 17

Purpose: We report a rare case of follicular conjunctivitis by phthiriasis palpebrarum that infested at a fomentation room. Case summary: A 55-year-old female complained of foreign body sensation and itching sensation of both eyes. She frequently attended the fomentation room. On slit lamp biomicroscopy and light microscopy, crab lice, Phthirus pubis and their nits were found on the both eyelashes. Also multiple follicles were visible on the lower palpebral conjunctiva of the both eyes. Treatment was accomplished with careful mechanical removal of the lice and nits followed by the epilation and application of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Two weeks after treatment, the ocular symptoms such as foreign body sensation, itching sensation were improved. After one month after the treatment, there were no recurrence of ocular symptoms and any other complications related with Phthiriasis palpebrarum. Conclusions: Phthiriasis is usually found in pubic hairs and has been known as a sexually transmitted disease. However, it should be reminded that transmission of Phthiriasis is possible through unsatisfactorily washed towel, blanket and clothes used at fomentation rooms, and that early diagnosis and proper treatment are necessary.
