Aesthetic Decompression of Orbital Neurofibroma

Purpose: To report 3 cases of orbitofacial neurofibromatosis type 1 (OFNF) in young Korean males and its aesthetic decompression. Case summary: Case 1 was a 38-year old male, who had neurofibroma (NF) on his left upper orbital rim, and we performed the mass removal anterolaterally with subrow approach. Case 2 was a 31-year old male, who had NF on his right upper orbital rim, and we performed anterior orbitotomy, and 4 months later we performed a levator resection on the same eye. Case 3 was a 30 year-old male who had a retrobulbar mass with proptosis. He had received a craniotomy at neurosurgery department, but the proptosis was not recovered, so we performed anterior and lateral orbitotomy, and the proptosis was relieved. Conclusions: NFs are benign or non-cancerous tumors that grow on nerves throughout the body. We present the three cases of orbital NF and its aesthetic treatment. Even though it is non-malignant condition, it is important to maintain the cosmetic interest for the patients, as it is strongly connected to the patients’ social life quality.
