Purpose: Amyloidosis involving the eyelid margin extending onto the conjunctiva is a very rare condition. We report our experience with a case of primary localized amyloidosis of the eyelid. Case summary: A 45-year-old man presented with a recurrent nodule on the left medial canthal area extending onto the punctum. He was previously diagnosed with mild squamous dysplasia and hyaline degeneration in stroma by histopathologic examination. Biopsy was performed through wide excision of mass under local anesthesia. Hematoxylin & eosin stained sections showed pink amorphous hyaline deposits and Congo red stained sections demonstrated dichroism and birefringence under polarized light microscopy. No systemic involvement was noted, therefore the patient was diagnosed with primary localized amyloidosis. At the postoperative 6-month follow-up, recurrence of mass was not observed. Conclusions: In the identification of an eyelid mass, amyloidosis should be considered. After successfully surgical excision, follow-up observation is required to watch for recurrence.
