자기 배려의 덕과 독신생활의 계보학

Virtue of Self-care and A Genealogy of Celibate Life - Focusing on Foucault’ History of Sexuality Ⅳ: the Confession of the Body -

본고는 영적 실천과 덕 수련의 자리로서 교구 사제의 독신생활에 관한 연구이다. 미셸 푸코(M. Foucault)의 자기 배려에 관한 계보학적 연구가 그리스도교 수도승 전통 안에서 독신생활 논의에 어떤 도움을 제공할 수 있는지 살핀다. 푸코가 직접 사제 독신에 대해 논의한 적은 없지만, 4세기 전후의 ‘동정’을 언급하는 그리스도교 교부들의 저술에 대한 푸코의 성찰을 이용한다. 푸코의 저서 성의 역사 Ⅳ: 육체의 고백를 이용하여, 독신생활 안에 포함된 자기 인식과 자기 배려의 주제를 분석한다. 특히 푸코가 분석한 치프리아누스(Cypurianus), 메토디우스(Methodius), 안키라(Ancyra)의 바실리우스(Basilius), 카시아누스(Cassianus)의 저술을 이용함으로써, 금욕생활로서 동정의 기술, 그리고 자기 해석학의 주제를 살핀다. 푸코의 관점에 따르면, 4세기의 그리스도교 교부들의 저술에서 다룬 동정의 주제에는 자기 자신의 영혼을 돌보는 기술로서 하느님과 인간의 관계방식을 포함하고 있었다. 이들은 동정의 주제를 규범적 차원으로 다루거나 자기 인식의 문제에 국한하여 다루지 않았다. 본고는 오늘날 교구 사제의 독신생활 안에 희석될 수 있는 ‘자기 성찰’과 ‘자기 변형’의 주제를 논하고, 도덕 수련과 영적 실천의 자리로서 독신생활의 의미를 고찰한다.

This article is a study of the celibate life for diocesan priests as a locus of virtue development, which explores how Foucault’s genealogical study of self-care can help to discuss a celibate life in the Christian monk tradition. Although Foucault never deal with priestly celibacy directly, this study uses Foucualt’s insights which mentioned the fourth century Christian Fathers’ statements about virginity. By using Foucault’s writing, The History of Sexuality IV: the Confession of the Body, this study analyzes the subject of self-perception and self-care in the celibate life. This study explores the issues of the technology of virginity as an ascetic life, and self-hermeneutics through using Foucault’s analysis on the statements of Cypurianus, Methodius, Ancyra’s Basilius, and Cassianus. According to Foucault’s insights, the fourth century Christian Father’s statements on the issues of virginity includes way of relationship between human and God, as the technology of soul care. The statements did not deal with virginity as the norm or self-determination alone. This article explores self-reflection and self-transformation which can be neglected today, and deals with the meaning of celibate life for diocesan priests as a locus of moral and spiritual practice.
