바울은 고린도전서 11:17, 22에서 고린도교회를 향해 그들을 칭찬하지 않는다고 반복해서 말한다. 교회는 마땅히 하나님과 하나님의 동역자들(고전 3:9)인 지도자들에게 칭찬을 받아야 하겠지만 고린도전서 11:17-34에 묘사된 고린도 교회는 칭찬을 받지 못하는 모습이다. 바울은 무엇 때문에 고린도 교회를 칭찬하지 않는다고 말하는가? 본 논문에서는 고린도전서 11:17-34절을 중심으로 바울이 고린도교회를 칭찬하지 않는 이유를 진단하고 고린도교회가 칭찬받는 교회가 될 수 있는 방안을 제시한다. 고린도교회는 주의 만찬에서 분열을 나타냈다. 부유한 자들은 자기의 만찬을 먼저 갖다 먹으므로 가난한 자들을 부끄럽게 했고 하나님의 교회를 업신여겼다. 바울은 칭찬받는 교회가 되기 위해 고린도교회에게 ‘주의 떡이나 잔을 합당하게 먹고 마시라,’ ‘자기를 살피라’ ‘몸을 분별하라’, ‘서로 기다리라’고 권면한다. 바울은 교회를 몸으로 이해하며 공동체로서의 몸을 분별하고 배려함으로 그리스도께서 자신을 주신 것을 기념하는 주의 만찬이 분열이 아닌 그리스도 안에서 하나됨을 드러내는 진정한 주의 만찬이 되기를 기대한다.
In 11:17 and 22 Paul repeatedly says that he does not praise the Corinthian christians because their gathering was not for the Lord’s dinner. For the praiseworthy Corinthian church Paul encourages them to keep the tradition he passed on to them. When they come together there are divisions among them due to their social and economic differences. Therefore Paul insists that they celebrate their own dinner rather than the Lord’s dinner. For the praiseworthy Corinthian church Paul asks them to participate in the Lord’s dinner in a worthy manner (1) by examining themselves, (2) by recognizing the body, and (3) by waiting for each other. The body which Corinthians should recognize seems to be the church in Christ. The Corinthian church needs to keep Lord’s dinner tradition in a worthy manner to stand as a praiseworthy church before the Lord and his apostle Paul.
