본 논문은 갈라디아서 4:14의 두 ὡς 구문인 ὡς ἄγγελον θεοῦ와 ὡς Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν에 대한 새로운 해석을 제안한다. 이전까지의 연구에서 이 두 ὡς 구문은 바울(me)과 관련하여 바울을 비유하는 방식으로 번역되었는데, 이로써 바울의 신성화와 관련된 오해를 야기하기도 하고 더불어 본문의 의미가 정확하게 규정되지 않았다. 그러나 첫 번째 ὡς 구문의 ἄγγελος 어휘에 대한 바울의 용법이 천상적 존재, 사자, 비유적 표현인 것을 염두에 두고, 두 번 사용된 ὡς의 기능이 구문론적으로 다른 기능을 한다는 점을 고려하여(ὡς 이하의 명사가 비교 명사와 동일할 경우 자격이나 존재, 다를 경우 ὡς 이하에 동사가 생략된 것으로 파악) 이 구절을 “[[너희가]] 그리스도 예수를 [[영접했]]듯이 나를 하나님의 사자로 영접했다.”로 해석하여 두번째 ὡς 구문은 영접의 비교를 나타내는 문장으로, 첫 번째 ὡς 구문은 실제로 갈라디아 교인들이 보인 바울에 대한 태도를 나타내는 것으로 해석 제안했다.

This article suggests a new understanding of two ὡς phrases, ὡς ἄγγελον θεοῦ and ὡς Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν at Galatians 4:14. The previous scholarship has tried to interpret these two ὡς phrases to describe Paul(me) in various ways. As a result, this verse used to cause some misunderstanding in terms of any deinification of Paul. However, considering ἄγγελος at the first ὡς phrase to indicate a divine being such as an angel, a messenger or a metaphorical usage and the ὡς which appears twice to function variously(e.g. to express someone’s qualification, identity or being in the case that a noun following ὡς indicates the same being of indicated noun, but when they are different, ὡς phrase needs to be translated in a full sentence with an assumed verb from the previous context), Galatians 4:14 can be translated as follows: “As [[you received]] Christ Jesus, you received as a God’s messenger.” In this translation, the second ὡς phrase describes what kind of welcoming was when the Galatians accepted Paul, but the first ὡς phrase shows Galatians’s attitude against Paul when they accepted him.
