본 논문은 18세기 영국의 대표 복음주의 찬송 시인인 윌리엄 쿠퍼에 관한 두 번째 연구로서, 『21세기 찬송가』에 실려 있는 두 편의 찬송시인 “샘물과 같은 보혈”과“귀하신 주님 계신 곳”에서 발견되는 쿠퍼의 신학관 및 신앙관에 대하여 다룬다. 이번 연구에서는 선행 연구에서 상세히 다루지 못했던 시인의 굴곡진 삶의 여정을 먼저 살펴보고 이어 『21세기 찬송가』에 실린 그의 두 편의 시에 나타난 신학적인 조명을 통해 우리 예배에서 그의 찬송시 사용에 대한 적합성을 평가하고 그의 찬송시의 가치와 그의 업적을 고찰한다. 이를 통해 공예배에서 부르는 찬송가에 대한 올바른 신학적 통찰력의 중요성에 대해 다시 한번 되새겨 보고자 한다. 영국 국교회 내에서 복음주의자로 활동했던 쿠퍼의 찬송시에서 발견되는 신학적인 주제는 우선적으로, 타락한 인간이 직면한 존재론적 위기에 대한 예수의 십자가상의 대속을 통한 구원이다. 오직 예수의 피 흘리신 십자가 사건만이 인간을 구원하는 유일한 해결책이라는 기독론적 구원론과 이에 따른 복음의 당위성이 쿠퍼의 생생한 묘사를 통해 선명하게 제시되고 있다. 둘째로, 칼빈주의 5대 교리인 은혜의 교리를 기초로 하고 있다. 즉, 전적 부패와 성부 하나님의 무조건적 선택, 성자예수님의 제한적 속죄와 성령 하나님의 불가항적인 은혜 등, 삼위일체 하나님의 거룩한 협의적 사역에 대한 교리가 시인인 쿠퍼의 탁월한 문학적 어법 안에 분명하게드러나 있다. 더불어 그 교리적 가르침 속에는 하나님의 구원 사역을 완성시키는과정에서 택함을 입은 백성들이 마땅히 가져야 할 책무와 강령이 있음을 시인은 지적하고 있다. 포스트모더니즘의 영향으로 교회에서의 교리 교육에 대한 관심이 현저하게 줄어들고 교회음악 안에서 찬송가의 중요성이 점점 더 떨어지는 우리 시대에, 쿠퍼의찬송시와 같은 실질적인 신학적 지침서로서의 기능과 역할을 가지는 올바르게 쓰여진 찬송가의 적극적인 부르기가 회복되기를 간절히 소망한다. 이를 통해 개혁주의 예배 원리의 중요한 부분인 회중들의 활발한 예배 참여에 대한 의지와 열정이다시금 회복되기를 고대한다.

This is the second study regarding William Cowper(1731-1800), one of the leading evangelical hymn writers of England in the 18th century, dealing with his two hymns−There is a Fountain Filled with Blood and Jesus, Where’re Thy People Meet−in Korean 21st-Century Hymnal(2006). After providing a biographical sketch of him, this paper focuses on theological insights found in these hymn texts to examine Cowper’s contribution to hymnology as well as the value of his hymns and their suitability in our corporate worship service. The most prominent theological motifs found in these hymns are Christ’s redemptive death on the Cross, total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, and irresistible grace. These are evidently presented through the divine unity of the works of the Trinity. In addition, Cowper points out that some responsibilities and code of conduct toward God’s chosen people are required in the process of completing the salvation process by God. The influence of the Postmodernism has significantly diminished the interest and the importance of catechism in our churches, consequently diminishing the role and function of hymns as a practical theological guide as well. The vital singing of hymns written in biblical and theologically sound bases such as Cowper’s should be regained, so that the active participation of the congregation in our corporate worship, the essential part of reformed tradition, can be restored.
