Toward a Life Ethics of Care : Self, Other and Death in Light of Metabolism and Immune System

이 논문에서 우리는 생명현상에 대한 고찰에서 출발하여 자기와 타자의 관계와 그 윤리적 함축을 살펴보고자 한다. 이는 20세기 현대철학의 주요한 흐름 중 하나인 타자 지향적 윤리학에 대한 하나의 대안적 윤리학의 전망을 소묘하기 위한 것이다. 우리가 주목할 생명현상은 물질대사와 면역계이다. 우선, 한스 요나스의 논의를 따를 때 물질대사는 생명체를 항구적으로 죽음의 위협에 처한 존재자, 따라서 자기의 존재 자체가 자신에게 문제되는 존재자로 드러낼 것이다. 생명체에게 자기의 존재는 끊임없는 보살핌과 배려의 대상이며, 생명체의 삶이란 자기 보존을 위한 자기 배려의 활동과 다르지 않다. 다음으로, 생명체의 자기 자체가 출현하는 현상을 살펴보기 위해 우리는 면역계의 메커니즘을 살펴볼 것이다. 면역계에 대한 고찰을 통해서 생명체는 죽음을 단지 매 순간 회피하고 지연시키면서 외재적으로만 마주하는 것이 아니라, 바로 그러한 회피와 지연을 위해 죽음의 힘을 적극적으로 활용한다는 것이 드러날 것이다. 생명체가 본질적으로 죽음에 의해 규정되어야 한다면, 이는 생명체가 죽음을 통해 자기를 조형하는 노력으로 규정될 수 있기 때문이다. 끝으로, 우리는 결론에서 이상의 고찰들로부터 끌어낼 수 있는 윤리학적 전망을 간단히 그려볼 것이다.

In this article, we will reconstruct the relationship between Self and Other and examine its ethical implications in the light of certain phenomena of life. It is about sketching out the perspective of an alternative ethics to the ethics of the other, one of the major trends of contemporary Western philosophy. The phenomena of life that we are going to pay attention to are the metabolism and the immune system. First, according to Hans Jonas, the metabolism will reveal the essence of life as a being under constant threat of death and whose existence becomes a problem for itself. Next, we will examine the mechanisms of the immune system to see how the biological Self emerges. Through examination of the immune system, it will be revealed that life forms not only face death from the outside by avoiding and delaying death at every moment, but actively use the power of death to shape itself. Finally, we will provide a brief picture of the ethical perspectives that can be drawn from the above considerations in the conclusion.
