소외의 재현

Representation of Alienation : Focusing on the series of “The Lonely Man Hiding” in The Deep-Rooted Tree

이 글의 문제의식은 1970년대 민중 담론 혹은 민중 표상의 지형 안에, 『뿌리깊은 나무』의 「숨어사는 외톨박이」 시리즈에 재현된 ‘토박이 민중’의 자리를 어떻게 위치시킬 수 있을지에 모아져 있다. 전통에 밀착된 삶의 방식이 산업화의 소용돌이 속에서 자발적·비자발적 타자화에 직면하는 상황에 관심을 두었으며, 특히 근대적 교육제도와 직업세계로부터 타자화된 ‘토박이 민중’의 울분과 생존의 고투를 재현해낸 지점에 주목하였다. 실제로 ‘토박이 민중’ 재현은, 그들이 박정희 정권의 개발주의와 어떻게 대면하고, 그것에 흡수 혹은 배제되는지를 함축적으로 보여준다. ‘토박이 민중’은 신분제 해체와 산업화의 속도전 속에서도 ‘천한’ 신분이라는 전근대적 의식을 떨쳐내지 못한 채, 근대의 하층계급으로 타자화 된다. 즉 ‘토박이 민중’은 중층적 소외 상황에 처해 있는 셈이다. 그들의 일자리는 자본제적 임금노동의 구조로도, 혹은 영세소상공업자의 이윤 추구 시스템으로도 온전히 수렴되지 못한다. 그렇기 때문에 ‘토박이 민중’의 일(직업)은 그 자체로 그들의 정체성과 호환된다. 요컨대 개체적 실존이 부각되는 ‘토박이 민중’의 재현은 당대의 주류적 민중 표상과는 차별화된다는 점에서 의미 있는 성과라 하겠다.

This article started with the question of how to place “the native people” that were represented in the series of “The lonely man hiding” in The Deep-Rooted Tree, in the topography of the people’s discourse or people’s representation. I was interested in the situation in which the way of life adhered to the tradition faces spontaneous or involuntary otherization in the vortex of industrialization. “The lonely man hiding” series recreated the resentment and struggles of survival of “the native people” who had been otherized by the modern educational system and the professional world. In fact, the representation of “the native people” in the series of “The lonely man hiding” shows implicitly how they face the developmentalism of the Park Chung-hee regime and are absorbed or excluded from it. The representation of “native people” is distinct from that of mainstream people. They are the lower classes of the industrialized society and are not free from the status consciousness of the pre-modern society. In other words, the “native people” are in a multi-level alienation situation. They cannot converge on the structure of capitalized wage labor and the profit-seeking system. Therefore, the job (occupation) of “the native people” is itself the same as their identity. In short, the representation of “native people” highlighted the individual existence. This is a meaningful achievement in that it is differentiated from the mainstream representation of that period.
