Topophilia and Heterotopia in Lim, Ok-in’s Novels

본고는 월남지식인여성작가 임옥인의 소설 속 장소애의 대상을 분석하고 ‘다른 공간’(헤테로토피아)에의 지향이 지닌 의미를 탐색하고자 한다. 임옥인의 소설에서 자아 정체성의 근거로서 의미 있는 장소는 유년의 고향을 환기하는 ‘부엌’이나 맑고 아름다운 ‘동산’으로 집약된다. 임옥인에게 부엌과 세간이 여성의 가사노동과 결부된 장소로 현실 가부장제에 대한 문제제기와 이어진다면, 동산과 대지의 장소성은 공간 개발의 꿈과 연결되며 지식인의 욕망을 내포한다. 유토피아로서 동산은 임옥인 소설에서 건축물로서 완성된 것이 아니라 지연되는 공간, 설계만 이루어진 채 멈춰진 공간으로 나타난다. 이와 달리 부엌세간에 대한 지향성은 유년의 고향이 주는 충만함을 환기하며 헤테로토피아의 성격을 나타낸다. 임옥인의 소설에서는 여성들이 타자로서 서로의 운명에 대한 공감과 위로, 수다와 안식을 나누는 ‘다른 공간’이 자매애의 충만함으로 서사화하는 것이다.

This study aims to analyze the object of topophilia ane search the meaning of inclination for ‘another place’(heterotopia) in Lim, Ok-in’s novels. In her novels, the significant place which one’s identity based on is a kitchen which arouse her childhood hometown and a garden fresh and beautiful. The sense of kitchen and household effects which connected a woman’s domestic duties raises a question to the present patriarchy. And the sense of garden and earth which connected the dream for place development involves the desire of an intellectual. As a Utopia, the garden is appeared not a completed place but a delayed palce, and a stopped place just under design in Lim Ok-in’s novels. Besids, the kitchen arouses the feeling of fullness from the childhood hometown so it showes an aspect of heterotopia. Her novels narrates an ‘another place’ full of sisterhood in which wemen share own life, chatting and rest and sympathize, comfort with each other.
