A Study on the Concept of the Human Nature of Su Shi’s

본고는 소식의 인성론을 위주로 그의 사상 심층에 접근하고자 했다. 소식은 당대의 다양한 인성론을 비판하고 그 대안을 마련하려는 강한 지향이 있었기 때문이다. 기존의 연구에는 해소되어야 할 쟁점이 있다. 첫째, 소식이 생각했던 본성 개념은 생리적ㆍ육체적이었는가, 아니면 초월적·절대적이었는가 하는 점이다. 둘째, 소식의 본성 개념은 성무선무악설(性無善無惡說), 성선악혼재설(性善惡混在說), 성선설 중 어느 것에 부합했느냐 하는 점이다. 본고는 전체 북송대 인성론의 전개 과정에서 소식의 인성론이 지닌 함축을 드러내려고 했다. 소식 당대에는 성선설 쪽에서 성악설을 포섭하려는 호원 계열과, 성악설 쪽에 서 있던 구양수·왕안석 계열이 병존했다. 소식은 그 이론적 구도에서 순자 쪽에 서 있었으나 그마저 성악설의 기치를 높이 든다면 인성론 논쟁은 종식되기는커녕 대립적 분위기가 더 가열되리라고 우려했을 것이다. 그래서 소식은 한편으로 성악설에 입각한 본성 개념을 받아들이면서도 본성에 초월성을 부여함으로써 그것이 선악의 규정을 넘어설 수 있게 했다. 곧, 소식에게서 본성은 욕구적 존재인 동시에 초월적·절대적 존재였다. 이러한 본성 개념은 성무선무악설과 성선악혼재설을 모두 포괄할 수 있는 것이었다.

This article sought to approach the depths of Su Shi’s thoughts, focusing on his theory of human nature. Su had a strong will to criticize the various doctrines of nature in his time, and to present the alternatives of them. Previous studies have had issues that need to be addressed. First, was the concept of nature he thought physiological and physical, or transcendental and absolute? This paper tried to reveal the implications of Su’s doctrine of the nature, placing it in the history of thoughts in the Northern Song Dynasty. During his time, there were a line of Hu Yuan, who wanted to incorporate the doctrine of innate evilness into the doctrine of innate goodness, and that of Ouyang Xiu, who were supporting the latter. Su stood on the side of Ouyang Xiu in the theoretical scheme. However, he might have been concerned that if he raised the banner of the doctrine of innate evilness, the debate over the theory of nature would heat up, let alone end. So on the one hand, he accepted the concept of human nature based on the doctrine of innate evilness while still giving it transcendental attributes, so allowing it to go beyond the definition of good and evil. In other words, in Su, human nature was both a desire and a transcendent one.
