고등학교 영어교과서에 사용된 등위접속사 ‘and’의 문법적 및 의미적 분석

A comparative analysis of the coordinator ‘and’ used in Korean high school English textbooks

This study compares the usage of the coordinator ‘and’ as a cohesive device between the Corpus of Contemporary American (COCA) and Korean High School English Textbooks. For this study, 200 sentences were randomly selected from COCA in academic writing and the three most widely used textbooks from English II. The target features are the six types of coordinated constituents and the eight types of connotation classified by Quirk et al. (1985). The results show that the three textbooks do not reflect the usage of native speakers’ speech enough both in the grammatical and semantic aspects. The results also include that a certain textbook is worse than the others because it only deals with the low percentage of the usage found in COCA. The findings of this study suggest pedagogical implications which could help to deal with the usage of authentic and various register in English textbook. (141 words)
