The purpose of the study is to examine Korean learners’ use of speech-like discourse markers in the argumentative essays. Since the discourse marker is more peculiar to spoken language rather than written, it can help understand Korean learners’ acquisition of their target language in terms of style. For this end, the study adopts two learner corpora and a reference corpus: Korean International Corpus of Learner English (ICLE), the Louvain Corpus of Native English Essays (LOCNESS), and the British National Corpus (BNC) Sampler. With these corpora, the analysis is based on the Contrastive Interlanguage Analysis (CIA). From the quantitative perspective, the general frequency patterns of the speech-like discourse markers are analysed to investigate similarities and differences between Korean learners and native learners and overused/underused types with the calculation of Log-likelihood values. From the qualitative perspective, Korean learners’ stylistic features used in the argumentative essays are compared with those of native learners and native speakers in the reference corpus. The results of the study show that Korean learners overused the speech-like discourse markers in the comparison of native learners. One of the interesting points in this regard is both Korean and native learners overused them when compared to written data from the BNC sampler. One possible explanation is that their overused discourse markers may be related to the influence of writing argumentative essays. (221 words)
