Elizabeth between Inferiority and Superiority : Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice

현재까지 제인 오스틴의 『오만과 편견』의 여주인공 엘리자베스는 페미니스트 관점에서 주로 분석되어 당당하면서도 자기주장이 강한 여성으로 분석되었다. 본 연구에서는 작중 다른 인물보다 실제로 열등감을 가장 많이 표현하는 엘리자베스를 새로운 시각으로 접근하여 그녀가 가진 열등감과 우월감을 사회적, 경제적, 가정적인 상황에서 분석해 보았다. 18세기 말에서 19세기 초 여성들의 상황과 그 여성들에게 요구되는 사회적 조건 ,산업혁명으로 인한 사회의 변화와 경제적 여건 및 개인의 정서에 큰 영향을 미치는 가정 내 모습 등을 통해 엘리자베스의 열등감과 우월감을 고찰하였다. 구체적으로 열등감과 우월감 사이에 있는 엘리자베스의 상황과 그녀의 열등감과 우월감의 표출 방식, 나아가 이러한 열등감과 우월감이 그녀와 그녀 주변인의 삶에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 분석하였다. 또한 그녀가 열등감을 극복하는 과정과 긍정적 우월감을 성취해나가는 모습을 살펴봄으로써 작가가 궁극적으로 당시 영국 사회에 전달하고자 하는 바가 무엇인지 고찰하였다.

This article attempts to examine Elizabeth Bennet, the main protagonist of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice(1813), by exploring her inferiority as well as superiority complex. Between the late 18th and the early 19th century, women’s social conditions deteriorated and the social changes caused by the Industrial Revolution worsened the situation of the poor gentry class in the countryside. In this context, this article examines Elizabeth’s inferiority complex and how her sense of inferiority is expressed. At the same time, it analyzes her superiority, considered as her being a proud woman, and the correlation between her superiority and inferiority. This article looks at how Elizabeth overcomes inferiority, how her self-awareness takes place in the process, and how these changes affect her life. Moreover, it examines what Elizabeth’s inferiority and superiority mean in Pride and Prejudice and what Jane Austen wants to say through her novel.
