팬데믹에 대한 종교개혁 신학자들의 이해와 대응

Reformers Understanding and Response to the Pandemic: Focusing on John Calvin

지금 인류는 코로나19로 공포와 충격 속에서 하루하루를 살아가고 있다. 어느 누구도 안심하고 숨을 쉴 수도 없으며 작년처럼 자연스럽게 타인과 함께 만날 수도 또 식사도 할 수 없는 상황에 있다. 2020년 12월에 미국을 비롯한 많은 국가에서 확진자들과 사망자가 날마다 늘어나고 있다. 현재 전 세계는 이 전염병의 공포와 위협이 모든 일을 멈추게 하였다. 보이지 않는 바이러스가 인류를 이렇게 위협적으로 지배하고 있다. 이런 결과들은 긍정적인 측면에서는 현대 인류로 하여금 자연생태계와 공존하도록 강하게 촉구하고 있다. 현재와 같은 팬데믹 상황은 500년 전에 살았던 종교개혁자들의 모습과 유사하다. 그들 모두는 흑사병으로 쓰라린 고통을 당했다. 이 글에서는 먼저 교회 역사 속에서 흑사병으로 고난을 당했던 초대교회의 모습으로부터 중세 교회까지 배경적 이해를 위하여 살펴볼 것이다. 그 다음은 16세기 유럽에서 발생한 전염병으로 인하여 슬픔과 고난의 상황 속에 살았던 종교개혁자들의 전염병에 대한 이해와 대응방식에 대하여 포괄적으로 다룬 후에 칼빈을 중심으로 이 무서운 재난을 어떻게 극복하였는지 신학적인 관점에서 이해하고 그 대응책에 대하여 살펴본다. 종교개혁자들은 흑사병을 하나님의 심판으로 보았으며 신앙적 관점을 중요시했을 뿐만 아니라 의학적인 방법을 사용하기 위하여 이성의 활동도 강조하였다. 고난을 통하여 믿음으로 천국을 소망하였으며 병든 자들을 위하여 헌신적 사랑의 실천을 다 하였다.

Now peoples are living in fear and shock with Corona 19. No one can breathe with safety like last year, they are in a situation where they cannot meet or eat with others naturally. In December 2020, the number of confirmed cases and deaths increased day by day in the United States and many other countries. The world now has the fear and threat of this epidemic that has stopped everything. The invisible virus is dominating humanity with this threat. On the positive side, these results strongly urge modern humans to coexist with the natural ecosystem. The current pandemic is similar to that of the Reformers who lived 500 years ago. All of them suffered bitterness from the Black Death. From the early church to the medieval church we will first look at the historical background for understanding of this topic. Next, this article comprehensively deals with the understanding of the infectious disease and the way of responding to the Reformers who lived in a situation of sorrow and suffering due to the epidemic that occurred in Europe in the 16th century. Later, with focusing on Calvin, I will investigate how he overcame this terrible disaster from a theological point of view and examine his countermeasures. The Reformers viewed the Black Death as God s judgment. They not only placed the importance on a religious perspective, but also emphasized the activity of reason using medical methods. Through hardships, they hoped for heaven through faith and did all their dedication to love for the sick.
