A Study on Construction Timeline of Anheungjinseong Fortress

태안 안흥진성은 바다를 향해 돌출된 태안반도의 서쪽 끝에 자리하고 있다. 이곳은 삼면이 바다로 되어 있어 고려시대 이래로 삼남(三南)지역의 조운선(漕運船)이 개경이나 한양으로 가기 위해서는 반드시 거쳐야 하는 관문이었다. 지리적인 요충지에 자리하고 있는 셈이다. 지금까지 안흥진성은『대동지지』에 기록되어 있는 대로 김석견의 건의에 의해 1655년에서 1656년에 걸쳐 축조된 것으로 알려져 왔다. 그런데 현재의 안흥진성 성벽에는‘만력 11년’명 각자성석(刻字城石)이 있고, ‘이하은진(以下恩津)’, 혹은‘이상은진(以上恩津)’이라고 새겨진 각자성석이 원래의 위치에서 이탈해 자리하고 있다. 이러한 사실로 미루어 볼 때 현재의 안흥진성이 초축(初築)된 것은 만력 11년, 즉 1583년이고 1655~1656년에 축조되었다는 것은 초축이 아니라 수축(修築)으로 판단된다. 이때‘이하은진’이나‘이상은진’과 같은 각자성석도 원래의 위치에서 벗어나 현재 남아 있는 것과 같은 형태로 자리하게 된 것이다. 한편, 동벽의 일부는 다른 구간의 성벽과 축성법을 달리하는데, 1750년에 폭우로 성벽이 붕괴된 것을 다시 축조하였다는 기록이 있는 것으로 보아 이 시기에 축조된 것으로 믿어진다.

Anheungjinseong Fortress is located at the west end of Taean peninsula, which protrudes into the sea. Taean was the gateway which cargo vessels certainly have passed on their way to Gaegyeong and Hanyang, placing the fortress at a geographically strategic location. Until now, it had been thought that Anheungjinseong Fortress was built between 1655 and 1656. However, it now seems that this is not quite the case. Rather, the fortress had actually been built earlier on Hwajeongdo Island and only later moved to its present location. With this in mind, we need to examine when the existing Anheungjinseong Fortress was actually constructed. To assist in that endeavor, a fortress stone carved with the inscription, ‘Manryuk 11th year,’ is noteworthy. This stone was discovered in the south wall and led to the assumption that Anheungjinseong Fortress was built in 1583(Manryuk 11th year). In short, Anheungjinseong Fortress was first built in 1583, moved to Hwajeongdo Island between 1655 and 1656 and returned to its current location in 1669. As such, it is now believed that the fortress was constructed in 1669. Meanwhile, some parts of the east wall show different construction technique compared to those in other sections. From this, and documentation revealing that the east wall collapsed due to heavy rain and was rebuilt in 1750, it is believed that sections of the wall were built in that year.
