고고유적에서 채취한 토양시료가 지닌 과거 인간사회에 대한 정보는 인간이 의도를 가지고 제작한 유물이 지닌 그것만큼이나 중요하다고 할 수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고;고고학의 역사에서 이들은 상대적으로 인공유물들에 비해 큰 주목을 받지 못하였고;현재 한국고고학에서도 이러한 기조는 이어지고 있다. 본고는 남한지역 신석기시대;청동기시대;역사시대 유적에서 채취한 토양시료에 잔존하는 미량 유기물(Organic residue)에 대한 분석을 통해;지금까지 인지 할 수 없었던 과거 인간 행위의 단면을 살펴보고자 하였다. 분석에 활용된 시료들은 김포 신곡;용인 영문리;부여 송국리;그리고 고령지산동 유적등 다양한 고고학적 맥락에서 채취되었다. 눈에 보이는 유기물의 출토가 흔치 않은 한반도의 환경적 특성으로 말미암아 이와 관련한 인간 활동에 대한 고찰이 부족한 상황에서 토양시료에 잔존하는 미량 유기물들은 고고학적 해석의 깊이를 더하는데 기여할 수 있다. 연구결과;김포 신곡 유적에서는 사슴이나 노루;멧돼지 등이 함정을 통해 사냥되었을 가능성을 엿볼 수 있었으며;용인 영문리 유적에서는 수렵과 농경이 혼재된 생계방식의 양상을 확인할 수 있었다. 한편 부여 송국리 유적에서는 야외노지가 조리 활동에 활용되었다는 증거를 확보할 수 있었고;고령 지산동 유적에서는 매장의례 과정에서 공헌물로 돼지를 활용했을 가능성을 상정할 수 있었다. 토양시료의 분석을 바탕으로 지엽적인 추정 이상의 고고학적 고찰을 시도하기 위해서는 데이터의 축적과 더불어;발굴 맥락에 대한 면밀한 파악에 기반한 체계적인 적용이 요구된다.
This study attempts to understand human activities of the ancient Korean peninsula through the organic residue analysis on soil samples collected from the major prehistoric and historical sites. Our knowledge on the ancient human society can be broaden only with the exhaustive investigation on the every aspect of archaeological phenomena. In this perspective;the analysis on ancient lipids extracted from the soil samples using GC-MS and isotope analysis can contribute to our understanding of the true nature of past human lives. Soil samples for the analyses in this study were collected from the various contexts of four prehistoric and early historical sites: Shingok;Youngmoon-ri;Songguk-ri;and Jisan-dong. The results revealed some of the unknown aspects of ancient human activities. For example;at Shingok;an inland open-air Neolithic site in Kimpo city;we were able to see the evidence of animal trapping. At Youngmoon-ri;Bronze Age settlement site in Yongin city;utilization of a wider range of resources was witnessed. The results presented in this study showed strong potential of soil samples for broadening our understanding of human past.
