조선조 술사의 존재 양상과 그 함의

A Study on the Aspects and Cultural Meanings of Diviner in the Joseon Dynasty

이 글은 조선 시대를 중심으로 술사의 존재 양상을 통시적으로 살펴보고, 이를 토대로 전통시대 우리 문화사에서 술사가 갖고 있는 위상과 의의를 탐색해본 것이다. 술사란 천문, 지리, 의약, 복서 등 소위 술수지학에 능통한 존재를 지칭하는 것으로, 여러 문헌 및 문학작품 등에서 다채로운 모습으로 산견된다. 『해동이적』, 『해동전도록』 등 이들의 행적을 전면적으로 취합해 기록하고 있는 자료가 대표적이며, 야담이나 소설 등의 다양한 서사물 또한 그 예라 할 것이다. 이러한 자료들을 두루 검토해본바 조선조 술사는 시대의 국면마다 다양한 모습으로 형상화되고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 본고에선 이를 세 층위로 나누어 살펴보았다. 먼저 16세기는 저명한 술사들이 집중적으로 출현했던 시기로, 이 시기 술사들은 유학자로서의 정체성과 특유의 집단성을 바탕으로 이전과 구분되는 술사상을 구축하고 있었다. 이후 잇따른 전국가적 병란을 경유하며 술사는 다소 달라진 모습으로 포착된다. 위기를 맞닥뜨린 국가와 인민에게 그것을 타개하고 극복할 수 있는 답을 제시하며 자신의 좌표를 보정하였던 것이다. 그런가 하면 후대로 내려오면서 도선적 색채는 거의 사라지고 흥미를 끄는 술수만 남아 앞 시기와는 또 다른 술사의 캐릭터화가 일어나기도 하였는데, 이 과정에서 세속적 욕망과 관심이 강하게 투영되고 있음을 특기해둘 만하다. 술사의 존재 양상에 대한 이러한 통시적 조망은 술사를 도가자류의 아류적 형상 정도로 간주해온 종래의 관점을 극복하는 반성적 사유의 단서를 제공해준다. 이는 나아가 술사로 표징되는 별도의 문화적 입지에 대한 가능성을 타진하게 하는데, 이에 대한 지속적인 탐구를 통해 우리 문화사를 더욱 풍요롭게 이해하는 학적 시좌를 개척할 수 있으리라 기대한다.

This article examines the aspects and cultural meanings of diviner in the Joseon Dynasty from a diachronic perspective, and based on this, explores the significance of diviner in the pre-modern cultural history of Korea. Diviner refers to a person who is well-versed and skilled in celestial pattern, principle of earth, medicine and pharmacology, divination, etc. In Korea s pre-modern old books and literary works, they are recorded in various forms. For example, old books such as Haedongijeok(『海東異蹟』) and Haedongjeondorok(『海東傳道錄』) collect and record the activities of diviners. They can also be found in many epic stories such as Yadam(野談) and classic novels from the late Joseon Dynasty. Through a comprehensive review of these materials, it was possible to identify that the diviners of the Joseon Dynasty existed in various shapes according to the times. This article analyzes this issue on three levels. First of all, the 16th century was the time when the famous diviner appeared intensively. The characteristics of diviners during this period are their identity and collectivity as scholars. Based on this, a new diviner was created different from the previous era. Since then, the recurring big war has changed the shape of diviners. Diviners offered solutions to overcome the crisis to the nation and its people, and their personalities changed accordingly. By the 18th and 19th centuries, diviners were characterized in another way. The image of Taoism is almost gone, and only the tricks that attract people s interest are highlighted. It is noteworthy that secular desires and interests stand out in this process. The diachronic analysis as above allows us to reconsider the existing theory that diviners have been viewed as a subclass of the Taoist master. This is more important in that it reminds us of a separate cultural foundation symbolized by diviners. Through continuous research on this, it is expected that a new academic perspective on Korean cultural history will be pioneered.
