Metamorphosis of ‘Buda’ and ‘Pest’ during Fin-de-Siècle : From the Hungarian cities ‘Buda’ and ‘Pest’ to the imperial and the world city ‘Budapest’

부다페스트는 1872년 부다와 페스트, 오부다라는 3개의 도시가 하나로 합쳐서 형성된 인위적 도시이다. 부다와 페스트는 헝가리 중앙부에 위치한 지리적 이점과 강을 끼고 있는 교통의 편리함으로 인해 중세부터 헝가리의 중심도시가 되었고, 부다는 헝가리의 문화부흥을 이끌었던 마챠시 1세 왕의 치세에 왕도(王都)가 되어 중세 헝가리 문화의 요람이 되었다. 페스트는 상업과 주거지역으로 기능하며 부다와 함께 성장하였다. 헝가리는 오스트리아와 2중왕국을 성립하면서 부다(Buda)와 페스트,(Pest) 오부다(Obuda)의 통합을 강력하고 급속하게 추진하여 1872년 부다페스트가 성립되었다. 부다페스트는 오스트리아-헝가리 제국의 두 번째 수도로서 역사상 새로운 모습으로 다시 등장하게 되었으며, 부다와 페스트라는 헝가리의 도시에서 부다페스트라는 오스트리아-헝가리 제국의 도시로 탈바꿈하였다. 제국의 두 번째 수도가 되면서 부다페스트는 중부유럽 최대 규모의 도시가 되었고, 2차 세계대전 이전까지는 이른바 ‘세계도시’로서의 면모와 기능을 갖추고 그에 걸맞은 역할을 하였다. 부다페스트는 19세기 말 20세기 초 중부유럽과 발칸의 정치, 경제, 문화, 사회의 발전 과정에서 특히 경제, 문화 분야의 소통과 교류의 중심지가 되었으며, 교류형 도시의 특성에 걸맞게 특히 문화 분야에서의 독특한 성장과 발전, 창조를 이루어내었다.

This article examines how the city of Budapest emerged, and developed into an international city. In 1872, Budapest was formed from the merger three cities: Buda, Pest, and Óbuda, and as such is an artificially created city. Buda and Pest benefited from being located in the center of Hungary conveniently placed on a river, thus emerging as the central city in Hungary. Buda emerged as a city of the cultural renaissance under Matthias Corvinus, becoming a cradle of medieval Hungarian civilization. Pest grew alongside Buda as a residential and commercial center. Matthias Corvinus had the dream of constructing an empire uniting the people of the Danube River basin. In order to realize this dream, he pursued a policy aimed at strengthening his kingdom, and expanded the territory under his rule into Moravia and Silesia. Subsequently, in 1872, Buda and Pest were merged establishing the city of Budapest. Budapest emerged transformed as the second capital of the Austro-Hungarian empire. As the second imperial capital, it became the largest city in Central Europe, and prior to World War Two had the functions, appearance and role of a ‘global city’. This article examines how Budapest evolved from being the capital of Hungary to becoming an imperial capital, before being transformed into a global city. It considers the role of important historical events in the city’s character and the roles it would play.
