“hope even on this side of the grave”?: Liquid Modernity and the Ethics of Personal Relations in E.M. Forster’s Howards End

본 논문은 E.M. 포스터의 『하워즈 엔드』에 포착된 에드워드 시대의 근대성의 특징과 이에 대한 포스터의 태도를 레너드 바스트와 루스 윌콕스의 죽음을 중심으로 고찰한다. 포스터는 『하워즈 엔드』에서 금융자본주의사회 특유의 유동성과 불안정성이 확연해진 에드워드 시대의 영국 사회를 예리하게 인지하고 지정학적 경계를 넘나드는 현대자본의 유동성이 정착을 근간으로 하는 전통적인 공동체의 결속을 해체하는 양상을 탁월하게 그려낸다. 자본을 포함한 자원의 해체력과 축적력을 양극화하는 금융자본주의사회의 유동성과 정치·경제적 정의를 추구하는 민주주의에 대한 논의가 맞물려 사회적 불확실성이 증대하는 시기에 포스터는 『하워즈 엔드』를 통하여 ‘인격적인 관계 맺음’이 가능한지를 가늠한다. 『하워즈 엔드』에서 윌콕스 일가, 슐레겔 일가, 그리고 바스트 일가로 대변되는 근대적 계층구조의 형성은 산업자본주의에서 금융자본주의로의 이행과 맞물려 있으며, 레너드와 루스의 죽음은 거대함과 가속화를 추구하는 근대적 사회문화에서 배제되는 사회적 약자의 경험을 드러낸다. 포스터는 유동적 근대성의 활력에 주목하면서도 자유방임주의의 경제적, 윤리적 이면을 직시하고, 개인과 개인이 맺는 사적이고 인격적인 관계를 그 대안으로 제시한다. 『하워즈 엔드』에서 루스와 레너드의 죽음을 둘러싼 양상은 개인과 개인이 맺는 사적이고 인격적인 관계를 통해 불안정하고 유동적인 외적인 삶에 희망을 담보하고자 하는 시도가 치열하면서도 동시에 취약함을 암시한다. 그러나 포스터는 『하워즈 엔드』에서 유동적 근대성 이후의 새로운 문명을 희구한다. 포스터에게 그 희망은 거대한 변환의 시대를 같이 살아내는 사람들이 차이를 넘어 서로, 그리고 문명과 자연의 경계를 넘어 주변의 사물들과 맺는 동료애에 있다.

E.M. Forster’s Howards End (1910) was written at a time of democratic debates over the suffragist campaign for equal rights and parliamentary campaigns for pensions and unemployment benefits. On the surface, Forster’s novel holds itself aloof from such issues, but in Howards End Forster addresses with elaboration and penetration concerns for social vulnerability in the context of the market economy. Since its publication in 1910, much of the critical discourse surrounding Howards End has accepted the question of ‘who shall inherit England?’ as a main challenge that the novel presents and invited the reader to look into the schism within the British middle class represented by the Wilcoxes embodying an imperial and capitalist England and the Schlegels an aesthetic and liberal England. Such tendency among critics is not sufficiently attentive to Forster’s brilliant and comprehensive social commentary on Edwardian England. This paper proposes to consider the flights and deaths of Ruth Wilcox and Leonard Bast and to offer a corrective reading to the previous discussion of the novel that mainly focuses on the cultural tensions between the Schlegels and the Wilcoxes. It aims to acknowledge Forster’s uncanny sensitivity to his own times and to examine the ways in which the novel makes a compelling argument about rootless cumulative capitalism and social vulnerability caused by the flux of liquid modernity. Writing at the time of democratic debates over injustices in the law of economy and the consequent depersonalization, Forster puts into scrutiny his own liberalist beliefs in personal relations and calls for the ethics of comradeship in Howards End. The attempts and failures in connecting, as shown in the flights and deaths of Leonard and Ruth, reveal that Forster’s beliefs in responsiveness to others are at once sturdy and fragile, thereby making the novel enthralling.
