본 논문은 그레엄 그린의 『사건의 핵심』 속 종교와 윤리, 그리고 실천이라는, 문학사적으로 어느 정도 합의된 문제를 다시 돌아본다. 이 소설은 가톨릭 신자인 주인공의 자살로 마무리되는 이유로 오랜 시간 동안 가톨릭 율법과 사회적 윤리의 본질에 관한 논란들을 촉발시켜왔다. 가톨릭 전통의 교리를 거스르면서도 스스로의 도덕적 신념에 충실한 그의 선택이 종교적 존재로서, 그리고 사회적 존재로서 개인이 맺는 관계의 바탕 위에서 마주하는 불가피한 모순을 보여주며, 또한 이러한 대립을 넘어선 새로운 종교적 경험의 가능성을 함께 제시하고 있기 때문이다. 그리고 이 모든 종교적 경험은 마지막 순간까지 가톨릭의 형식 속에 남는다. 본 논문은 스코비의 종교적 고민이 율법주의적 제약을 벗어난 윤리를 실천하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 전통적인 가톨릭의 형식을 실천하는 모습을 보여주고 있으며, 바로 이 지점에 그의 종교적 행위의 본질이 존재함을 지적한다. 이는 억압적 율법을 넘어서는 새로운 신념과 실천의 지평이 종교적 형식의 바깥에만 존재하는 것은 아님을 시사한다. 『사건의 핵심』은 스코비의 죽음을 통해 본원적 도덕성으로 회귀하고 종교윤리를 실존적으로 재정립하는 순간을 가톨릭의 규율과 사회적 삶의 복잡한 관계 속 한 공간에 담아낸다.

This article addresses questions and provocations on Catholicism in Graham Greene’s The Heart of the Matter, especially in regard to the way in which the Catholic doctrine has been rejected in the modern world. Greene represents the inner conflict of Henry Scobie, the protagonist of the novel, in complex dimensions of religious ethics and its actual practices. Considering Henry’s disbelief in the light of his strong sense of empathy and emotional bond with others highlights the way in which the western society has been reconstructed in its relationship with God. Scobie, experiencing absurdity of the Catholic god and the society grounded in its principles, takes the role of the god. God becomes relocated into the position of another ‘other’. Henry’s inner turbulence and his religious skepticism illuminates the modes in which the deconstructive practices of religious doctrine open up new possibilities wherein modern subjectivity is captured and probed.
