A Study on the Origin of Ondol

이 글은 온돌의 기원지를 찾아 밝히기 위한 연구이다. 온돌의 기원지는 그동안 여러 지역으로 추정되어 왔다. 하지만 이들 지역을 살펴보면, 하나같이 爐에서 온돌로 발전되어가는 과정이 나타나지 않는다. 또한 온돌은 새로운 토기 제도술과 기종, 철제 농공구류 등 이질적인 물질자료와 함께 급격히 등장할 뿐이다. 따라서 온돌의 기원지는 기존에 추정되어온 지역이 아닌 다른 곳에 존재할 가능성이 크다. 기존에 온돌의 기원지로 추정된 지역은 하나같이 동북아시아의 40˚이상 고위도지역에서 기원전 3~2세기에 한정된다는 특징을 가진다. 이 점은 온돌의 실제 기원지 역시 이들 지역과 그리 멀지 않 은 곳에서 기원전 3세기 이전부터 존재하였을 가능성이 높다는 것을 의미한다. 여기에 기술 구조상 爐에서 곧바로 온돌이 발명되기는 어려우므로 폐쇄식爐나 배연구조를 갖춘 지역으로 그 대상지를 좁혀볼 필요가 있다. 이를 정리하면 온돌의 기원지는 기원전 3세기 이전에 아궁이·배연구조를 사용하던 동북아시아 40˚이상 고위도 지역에 존재할 가능성이 높다. 이에 따라 북위 40˚이상의 한반도 북부지방, 중국 북부(요령성·길림성·흑룡강성·내몽고자치구·하북성 북부·신강위구르자치구·감숙성 북부)지방, 몽골공화국, 러시아(연해주·자바이칼)일대의 사례를 대상으로 살펴보았다. 그 결과 한반도 북부, 몽골공화국, 러시아에서는 이에 해당하는 사례는 확인되지 않았다. 반면 중국에서는 신석기~전국시대에 이르기까지 아궁이식爐와 排煙構造를 갖춘 다양한 형태의 부뚜막이 확인된다. 특히 이 시기의 부뚜막이 집중되는 내몽고자치구 赤峰 敖漢旗 興隆溝遺蹟의 하가점 하층문화 단계에서 최초의 온돌이 확인되었다. 이후 戰國 燕의 당산 동환타유적에서는 전형적 인 ᄀ 자형 온돌이 나타난다. 동환타유적은 그동안 기원지로 추정되어온 지역의 ᄀ 자형 온돌과 구조, 형태, 시기차가 크지 않다. 이와 같이 온돌은 내몽고의 흥륭구유적에서 발생한 뒤, 하북성 동화타유적에서 전형적인 ᄀ 자형 구조로 발전하였음이 밝혀졌다.

This paper is a study to clarify the actual origin of ondol. There are several areas that have been estimated to be the origins of ondol. However, previous studies have revealed that it is not the origin of ondol. All of the places estimated to be the origins of the ondol correspond to the north latitude of 40° or more in Northeast Asia, and the 3rd~2nd centuries B.C. Therefore, there is a high possibility that the origin of the ondol existed not far from here. And since ondol cannot be invented directly from furnace, it can be possible to narrow it down to the area where the furnace and chimney were used. These include the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, the northern part of China, the Republic of Mongolia, and the Maritime Province of Russia and the Zabaikal region. However, there are no cases of this condition in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, the Mongolian Republic, and Russia, and many of them are confirmed only in China. In China, ondol appeared in the 15th century B.C. from the Xinglonggou site of Inner Mongolia. In the 4th century B.C., a typical ㄱ -shaped ondol was identified in the Donghuantuo site of Hebei province. Thus, the origin of the ondol is the Heungnyungyu site, and the typical ㄱ -shaped ondol was originated from the Donghuantuo site.
