For infrared windows and domes, Y2O3-MgO transparent nanocomposite has attractive much attention due to superior optical, mechanical and thermal properties. While there are its many advantages, severe grain boundary scattering in microstructure limits the applications. In recent, striking development of synthesis and sintering techniques can improve the near-infrared transparency and mechanical properties of the nanocomposite. Especially, the fine grain size enlarges the wavelength region with high transparency that this material is expected to be used for new and novel optical applications. In this article, characteristics, recent research trends and potential applications of the Y2O3-MgO nanocomposite are reported.
