사회진화담론과 이원론적 사고에 대한 비판적 검토

Critical Review of Social Evolution Discourse and Dualistic Thinking: Centered on Research Trends of the Mumun Age

본고의 작업은 어떻게 단편적인 고고자료를 통해 과거를 제대로 이해할 수 있을까에 대한 고민에서 시작되었다. 기존의 고고자료에 대한 해석은 대부분 이원론적인 사고를 바탕으로 사회진화담론을 통해 진행되었다. 한국 고고학에서는 수렵채집사회/농경사회, 평등사회/계층사회와 같은 이원론적 대립관계에 존재론적인 구분점이 있다는 생각을 전제로 많은 연구들이 진행되고 있다. 이 대립 구도는 자연과 문화를 분리시키는 근대 이후 서구적 가치체계와 밀접하게 관련되어 있다. 이러한 구분의 존재론적 근거에는 객관성보다는 권력관계를 바탕으로 한 가치판단의 문제가 자리 잡고 있다. 사회진화담론을 전제로 한 연구는 특정 사회 수준에 대한 자의적인 평가가 이뤄지기 쉽고, 총체론적이고 목적론적인 연구경향을 보인다는 심각한 문제점을 가지고 있다. 어떤 수준의 사회든 모두 개별적인 사회적 모순들을 가지고 있으며 그것은 특정 기준에 의해 그 높고 낮음을 평가할 수 있는 성질의 것이 아니다. 그리고 이원론과 사회진화담론을 바탕으로 한 연구 경향은 결과적으로 자본주의 산업사회의 가치체계를 구조화하는데 일조할 뿐 과거의 구체적인 실상을 밝히는데 큰 도움이 되지는 않는다. 과거는 현재와의 상호작용 속에서 다양하게 이해될 수 있으며 때로는 현재의 이데올로기를 형성하는데 적극적인 에이전트로서의 역할을 하기도 한다. 현재의 과거 인식은 이러한 과정 속에서 구조화되며 때로는 이 과정을 통해 변화하기도 한다. 따라서 현재 우리들의 사회구조나 인식체계에 대한 이해 없이는 과거에 대한 이해도 한계를 보일 수밖에 없다.

This study began with a concern how to understand the past properly through the fragmentary archeological materials. Most interpretations about the existing archeological materials were processed with the social evolution discourse based on the dualistic thinking. Korean archaeology is conducting a lot of research on the premise that there is ontological breakpoint in a dualistic antagonistic relationship with the hunter-gatherer society/agrarian society, and non-stratification society/stratification society. This opposite composition has been closely related to Western value system to separate nature from culture since the modern age. Ontological basis of this distinction is settled down in the problem of value judgement based on the power relations rather than its objectivity. This study was conducted on the premise of evolutionary discourse that it was easy to induce arbitrary evaluation of specific social level and that it had a serious problem to show wholistic and teleological research trends. Any level of society has individual social contradictions, but it is not of the nature of being high and low evaluation by certain criteria. In addition, the research trends based on the evolutionary discourse can contribute to structuralization of value system in the modern society only, but it will be very helpful to clarify the past specific actual state. The past can be understood under the current interaction in various ways, and sometimes it can play a role as active agent to form present ideology. Current perception of the past can be structuralized in this process, and sometimes it can be changed through this process. To conclude, this researcher considers it as it has no choice but to show the limitations of understanding the past without understanding our current social structure or recognition system.
