19세기 후반 우크라이나 민족운동의 발전과정, 성격 그리고 한계

The Development Process, Characteristics and Limitations of the Ukrainian National Movement in the Late 19th Century

민족주의는 민족의 ‘주의･주장’과 그것을 실현하고자 하는 ‘운동’의 모든 형태를 포괄하는 개념이다. 따라서 민족운동의 발전과정은 민족주의의 확산과정을 의미하는 것이다. 본 소고는 이러한 관점에서 19세기 후반 우크라이나 민족주의가 우크라이나 영토에서 어떻게 확산, 발전해 나갔는지, 그 특성은 무엇인지, 그리고 한계점은 무엇이었는지 파악하고 있다. 당시 우크라이나를 지배했던 러시아제국과 오스트리아 합스부르크 제국의 서로 다른 정치적 성격과 환경은 동과 서 우크라이나에서 민족주의 발전에 서로 다른 영향을 미쳤으며, 또한 두 지역 우크라이나 지식인들의 협력을 낳게 하는 결과를 가져왔다. 그러나 19세기 후반 민족운동을 구현할 주체세력으로서 농민을 제외한 다양한 계급과 계층의 참여를 이끌지 못했다는 점, 민족운동이 사회운동과 연계되어 지속되지 못했다는 점, 지식인들의 포률리즘적 사고와 태도로 완전한 독립국가성립의 필요성을 일찍부터 발전시키지 못했다는 점 등은 우크라이나민족주의가 갖는 특성과 한계점이었다고 분석하고 있다.

Nationalism is a concept that encompasses all forms of the nation s “attention and assertion” and the “movement” to realize them. Therefore, the development process of national movement means the process of spreading nationalism. From this point of view, this article discusses not only how Ukrainian nationalism spread and developed in the Ukrainian territory in the late 19th century, but also its characteristics and limitations. The different political characteristics and circumstances provided by the Russian Empire and the Austrian Habsburg Empire, which at that time divided Ukraine into East and West, had different effects on the development of nationalism in Ukraine, but also resulted in the cooperation of the two regions of Ukrainian intellectuals. This study also analyzes that the following factors are the characteristics and limitations of Ukrainian nationalism: First, Ukrainian nationalism failed to attract the participation of various classes other than peasants as a subject force of national movement. Second, national movements were not connected with social movements and failed to lead social transformation and revolution. Third, the necessity of establishing a complete independent state was not developed from early on with the intellectuals populist thinking and attitude.
