‘자유’와 ‘평등’ 개념을 통해 본 아렌트의 ‘교육의 위기’ 의의 탐구

Exploration of Arendt s 「The Crisis in Education」 through the Concept of Freedom and Equality

본 논문에서는 아렌트 『과거와 미래 사이』(1961)의 제 5장 「교육의 위기」를 통해 아렌트가 자유 와 평등 의 개념으로 분석하였던 미국 교육의 위기 실태에 대한 시사점을 고찰하고자 한다. 아렌트는 20세기 중반 미국이 당면했던 교육 위기의 실체를 공적영역 의 가치에 대한 성찰로 재조명하고자 했고, 미국 사회를 지탱하는 근본이념이자 미국 헌법에 보장된 정치적 이념인 자유 와 평등 을 토대로 새로운 관점을 제공하였다. 아렌트는 공적영역 의 자유 와 평등 의 의의(意義)가 교육에 투영되어 교육의 위기가 발생하였다고 보았다. 아렌트는 교육의 본질이란 세계와 아이들을 연결하는 구심점의 역할로서 자리해야 한다고 주장하였는데, 이를 위해 공적영역 으로부터 교육을 확실하게 분리해야 한다고 강조한다. 현대 사회에도 사회적･정치적 목적을 위해 교육을 수단화하고 변화시키려는 많은 시도가 존재한다. 아렌트가 제기한 개념들을 고찰해보는 것은 우리 사회의 교육에 통찰력을 부여해 줄 수 있을 것이다. 그러나 과거보다 훨씬 복잡하고 다양한 현대 사회에 공적인 가치를 교육에서 분리한다면 교육은 사회의 무한 경쟁에 노출되어 또 다른 문제가 발생할 여지가 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 교육과 연관된 자유 와 평등 개념에 관한 아렌트 주장을 파악해보고 비판과 의의를 찾는 과정을 통해 아렌트의 주장을 새롭게 탐구하고자 한다.

This paper is a theory that analyzes Arendt s essay 「The Crisis in Education」 and explores the implications of modern education with the ideology of freedom and equality , which is the basis idea of the United States. Arendt wanted to shed light on the substance that reflected the reality of the educational crisis facing the United States in the mid-20th century, and provided a new perspective by analyzing it based on freedom and equality , the fundamental ideology that supported American society and political ideology guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution. Arendt saw that the significance of freedom and equality in the public realm was reflected in education, resulting in the crisis in education. Arendt believed that the essence of education should be the role of a focal point between the world and children, and argued that education should be clearly separated from the public realm . However, since modern society has transformed into a much more complex and diverse society than in the past, if public values are removed from education and education is left to the logic of society, children may be exposed to infinite competition and cause another crisis. Therefore, in this paper, we would like to explore Arendt s arguments that can be applied to modern education through the process of criticizing and finding meaning in the core concepts of freedom and equality ideologies associated with education.
