탈식민 작가는 한편으로는 제국의 유산이 자신의 국가에 계속 유지되는 문화적 제국주의의 현실에 저항하고 다른 한편으로는 사회의 엘리트의 일방적 지배에도 저항해야 한다. 브렌단 비언은 영국이라는 제국과 아일랜드 정부 모두에 저항한 IRA 출신 작가이다. 그가 처한 곤경은 트리컨티넨탈 작가들이 공유하고 있는 문제이기도 했다. 그가 에이먼 데 벌레러나 코스그레이브 정부에 저항한 이유는 아일랜드 지도자들이 민중의 물질적, 정신적 가난을 채워줄 능력이 부족했기 때문이다. 『괴짜』는교도소라는 상황을 아일랜드 사회에 비추어 제국의 체제를 그대로 따르는 지도자에 대한 시민의 불만을 반영하고 있다. 『괴짜』는 두 가지 사실을 지적한다. 첫째, 탈식민 국가는 정치, 사회, 문화의 영역을 민주화하고 둘째, 노동자, 농민, 심지어 죄수와 같은 서발턴의 존재를 인정할 것을 요구한다. 요컨대 비언은 『괴짜』에서 제국의 영향으로부터 온전히 벗어나지 못한 아일랜드의 제도와 이기적이고 타락한 권력자를 고발하는 한편, 게일문화가 목소리를 상실한 채 서발턴화 되어가는 아일랜드를 보여준다.

A writer, in the postcolonial situation, may be faced with difficult missions of resisting to the colonization on the one hand, and struggling against the top-down elite of his nation. Brendan Behan, for example, was fighting against both ideologies of imperialism and nationalism, when he turned himself from an IRA soldier into a dramatist. This predicament seems to be the same with other writers from the former colonial nations. He didn’t hide the hot hostility to the new governments of Eamon de Valera and Cosgrave, not to mention of England. It is because the Irish leaders could not show their ability to satisfy the material and spiritual poverty of the people, while oppressing and depressing them by censoring and arresting the opposing citizens. In The Quare Fellow, the postcolonial regimes of Ireland followed the same bad manners of imperial social system and continued the dissatisfaction and discontent of the Irish people. Behan, in The Quare Fellow, is telling us two points: the first, the postcolonial movement of a nation should begin with political, economical, and cultural democratization. The second, the new order of postcolonial nation should recognize the presence of subaltern subjects such as peasants and laborers, including outlaws: they should have their own seat in the new society. Behan tries to accuse the Irish system and its selfish and corrupt power that have not been completely escaped from the influence of the British empire, while lamenting that the Gaelic culture is losing its voice.
