기후변화 시대의 사람들은 기후변화의 심각성을 알면서도 기후변화 완화를 위한 행동을 취하지 않는다. 기후에 대한 사람들의 이 모순적 대응은 기후변화를 가능하게 하고 또 악화시키는 주요 요인이다. 그럼에도 이 문제는 대중적 기후 서사에서는 다루어지지 않았다. 본 논문은 나이트 M. 샤말란 감독의 영화 <해프닝>을 기후 부인의 관점에서 독해함으로써 그렇지 않으면 파악하기 어려운 기후변화 대응의 현주소를 드러내 보여준다. 기후변화로 인해 초래된 기현상과 재난에 대한 <해프닝> 속 인물들의 회피적 반응은 기후변화 시대에 특징적으로 나타나는 역설을 반영한다. 본 논문은 영화 속 자연의 기현상에 대한 인물들의 회피적 반응을 심적 방어 기제인 ‘부인’으로 읽을 것이다. 기후 부인의 메커니즘을 규명함으로써 기후 역설을 설명하는 이 작업은 기후행위를 위한 방편모색의 계기를 제공한다. <해프닝>은 인물들이 기후변화로 인해 초래된 자연의 기현상과 재난들을 그들 자신이 연루되어 있는 사건으로 인식하게 함으로써 “기후 부인”을 극복할 수 있는 하나의 대안적 방편을 제시한다. 이때 영화는 인간에 대한 자연의 공격과 자연에 대한 인간의 폭력이 상호연결 되어 있음을 보여줌으로써 상호상처입을 가능성을 인식하게 한다. 이는 기후행위를 촉진하는 이야기를 다루는 “에코-트라우마 영화”의 핵심 주제다. 본 논문은 <해프닝>을 “에코-트라우마 영화” 서사의 형태로 읽음으로써 기후 부인을 극복하고 행위를 취할 수 가능한 방편을 제시할 것이다,
People in climate change era know the gravity of climate change but take no actions to mitigate it. This contradictory response from people to climate change is a major factor in enabling and worsening climate change, yet has not been addressed in the public climate change narrative. This paper reads evasive responses to an abnormal phenomenon of nature as ‘denial,’ a psychological defense mechanism. By explaining the climate change paradox by identifying the mechanism of climate denial, this work provides an opportunity to explore prospects of climate action. The Happening presents an alternative way of overcoming climate denial by allowing human beings to recognize disasters caused by climate change as a phenomenon in which they are involved. The film depicts mutual vulnerability by showing that natural attacks on humans and human exploitation of the environment and violence against nature are interconnected. This is a key theme in “eco-trauma cinema,” which deals with themes that promote climate action.
