미시마 유키오의 영화 <우국>에 드러난 여성의 육체

A Comparative Study of the Female Body in Mishima Yukio’s short story Patriotism and his film Patriotism, or the Rite of Love and Death

2·26 사건 외전으로 쓰여진 작품인, 할복 자살을 이루는 사관의 사건을 그린 &#65378;우국&#65379;(1961 년)은 주로 미시마 본인의 죽음과 관련해 논의되며, 남성 등장인물이 주된 분석의 대상이 되었다. 하지만, 할복자살하는 다케야마 중위라는 남성 외에 아내로 등장하는 레이코(麗子)도 스스로 죽음에 이르며 그녀의 내면에 대한 묘사 등이 상당한 비중으로 제시되고 있다는 점에 주목할 필요가 있다. 소설 발표 후 미시마는 자신이 스스로 감독과 주연을 맡아 &#65378;우국&#65379;을 영화화했는데, 특별히 애착을 지닌 작품을 영화화하는 과정에서 미시마는 영화 <우국>의 영화적 특징을 배가시키기 위해 노력했다. 미시마의 영화론 중 영화 <우국>과 관련해 관심을 끄는 것은 단연 &#65378;영화적 육체론&#65379;이다. 미시마는 &#65378;영화적 육체론&#65379;을 통해 영화에서 육체의 필요성에 대해 고민했다. 영화와 육체의 관계, 다시 말해 카메라에 담기는 배우의 육체가 어떤 영화적 특성을 함유하고 있는지에 대해 미시마는 진지하게 탐구했고 그 결과는 영화 <우국>을 통해 여실히 드러났다. 본 논문에서는 선행연구에서 간과되어 왔던 여성 등장인물의 죽음과 내면을 소설과 영화를 비교하면서 새롭게 고찰해보는 시도를 한다. 이를 통해 소설과 영화를 비교하는 과정을 통해 각각의 특징과 차별점을 밝히고 나아가 기존에 연구되지 않았던 미시마의 여성관을 포착할 수 있을 것이다. 본 논문은 소설과 영화에 드러나는 여성상의 차이점에 천착해 영화 <우국>이 소설과는 다른 지점의 여성상을 재현하고 있다는 점을 밝히고, 이런 차이점이 드러나는 원인에 대해 고찰해보고자 한다.

Patriotism(Y&#363;koku, 1961), a short story about the Ni Ni Roku Incident, depicts the experiences of Lieutenant Shinji Takeyama, an officer who committed suicide. It has mainly been discussed in the context of a debate about Mishima Yukio s own death, and the male characters in the story have been the primary subject of analysis. However, it is worth noting that Takeyama s wife Reiko also kills herself, and the portrayal of her inner life is a significant facet of the story. After its publication, Mishima co-directed the short film Patriotism, or the Rite of Love and Death, in which he also starred. In the film he tried to redouble the cinematic characteristics of the story. One of his theories of film that has drawn attention to the movie is his “Physical Theory of Film”, in light of which Mishima agonized over the centrality of the body in film. He intensively explored the relationship between film and the body, that is, what cinematic characteristics the actor s body has, and the result of this focus is clearly displayed in the movie Patriotism, or the Rite of Love and Death. In this paper, the deaths of female characters and their inner thoughts in the short story and in the movie, which have been overlooked in prior research, are compared, and an attempt is made to re-evaluate them. This process of comparing the treatment of women in Mishima s short story and film reveals the latters characteristics and the differences between them, and captures to a greater extent than before Mishima s view of women. Ultimately, the film Patriotism, or the Rite of Love and Death produces an image of women from a different perspective than the story, and I would like to consider how and why this difference came about.
