A Study on the Mechanism of Tragedy-based Storytelling Contents That Helps the Positive Spread of Local Activism

‘지역’이라는 표현은 문맥에 따라 2가지의 번역어로 쓰인다. 하나는 상대적으로 더 작고 중심에서 더 먼 지방을 가리키는 ‘로컬(local)’이고, 다른 하나는 고유한 특성을 지닌 독자적인 세력으로서의 범위를 가리키는 ‘리전(region)’이다. 세계화와 국제화의 시대를 맞이해서 각 지역에서 벌어지는 현상도 로컬과 리전이라는 서로 다른 차원에서 다양한 모습을 띤다독자적인 지역이라는 인식 또한 상반된 움직임을 만들어낸다. 국가가 자신의 행정권과 정치 역량을 지방 당국에 나눠주는 표면적이고 하향적인 지방분권화로서의 지역화(regionalization)와 지역 스스로의 시도 또는 투쟁을 통해 권력을 획득해나가는 근본적이고 상향적인 지역주의(regionalism)가 그것이다. 지역 기반의 활동 즉 로컬 액티비즘(local activism)은 자신이 거주하는 지역에 대한 애착 또는 애호를 기반으로 지역 스스로의 목소리를 내려는 지역주의 운동이면서, 로컬이라는 변방에서 리전이라는 중심으로 거듭나려는 운동의 성격을 띤다. 지역을 소재로 스토리텔링 기법을 결합시킨 지역 문화콘텐츠는 공감(empathy)과 동일시(identification) 작용에 의해 관심과 몰입을 불러일으킨다. 또한 내부인의 결속을 다지는 동시에 외부인의 관심과 호응을 유도함으로써 지역 액티비즘을 촉발시키고 확산시키는 역할을 한다. 이는 기호학적 이항대립 개념을 기반으로 만들어진 렐프(Edward Relph)의 인본지리학적 장소정체성 모델 중 ‘대리적 내부성’이라는 역할과 상통한다. 이를 통해 지역이라는 한계를 벗어나 지역 액티비즘에 대한 호감을 대외적으로 확산시키는 기제를 이해할 수 있다.

Two types of expression for a specific range of geographic areas are used depending on the context. One word is “local,” which refers to a relatively smaller and farther district from the center, and the other word is “regional,” which refers to a range of independent forces with unique characteristics. In the era of globalization and internationalization, various phenomena occurring in each region take on a variety of appearances at different levels, such as local and regional. The perception of an independent “region” also creates conflicting movements. Regionalization, first, as a superficial and downward decentralization in which the state distributes its administrative power and political capacity to local authorities, and regionalism, second, which is fundamental and upward, in which the region gains power through its own attempts or struggles. Local activism is a movement of localism in which a region speaks its own voice based on attachment or love for the region in which one lives. At the same time, it takes on the character of a movement to be reborn from the periphery as a “local” to the center as a “region”. Regional culture contents that combine storytelling techniques with local resources arouse interest and immersion in the region through the action of empathy and identification. In addition, it plays a role in triggering and spreading local activism by inducing interest and response from outsiders while strengthening the bond between insiders. This is in line with the role of “vicarious insideness” in Edward Relph s place identity model of humanistic geography which is created based on the semiotic concept of binary opposition. It is possible, through this, to understand the mechanism by which the likelihood of local activism is spread outside the limits of the region.
