개인의 의견표명 회피 행위의 유형과 해석

Rethinking the spiral of silence theory based on observation of nine small group conversations about plastic surgeries

여론에 관한 대표적인 커뮤니케이션 이론인 침묵의 나선 이론의 검증 과정에서 간과되어 온 소집단 커뮤니케이션 요소에 주목하여 이론을 비판적으로 고찰하고 있다. 특히 침묵을 의견표명 회피로 확대하고 가상이 아니라 실제 상황에서의 의견표명 혹은 회피 행위를 관찰하여 개념적·방법론적 개선을 시도했다. 구체적으로, 미용용 성형수술에 관한 대학생 소집단(n=68)의 토론을 관찰한 결과 고립에 대한 두려움과 여론 지각은 의견표명에 대한 여러 변인 중 하나일 뿐이며 자신이 소수임을 알고도 의견표명이 활발한 경우를 발견했다. 또 침묵 이외의 방법으로도 의견표명을 회피하며 그 원인은 고립의 두려움이 아닌 경우가 많았다. 그리고 매스미디어의 여론 단서는 소수의견의 억제보다는 특정 의견의 타당성을 증대시키는 근거로 기능했다.

This study critically reviewed Noelle-Neumann s spiral of silence theory focusing on opinion expression in a small group context. The study observed how the willingness to speak out and the perception of public opinion for a social issue (plastic surgery for beauty) can be changed as people perceive themselves as the supporter for majority or minority according to the climate of opinion in a small group communication context. Based on observation of 9 small group communication composed with university students, the current study suggests some directions to revise the spiral of silence theory.
