Heaven helps those who help themselves: Exploring journalism performance, backgrounds and strategies of Korea s Christian Broadcasting System

권력으로부터의 독립과 자율은 언론이 제 역할을 다하는 데 있어 필수적인 조건이다. 그러나 한국 사회에서 언론은 한편으로는 정치권력에 의해 다른 한편으로는 대기업과 같은 이익집단에 의해 부단히 독립성이 훼손되어 왔다. 1954년 최초의 민영방송으로 출범한 CBS는 이 과정에서 권력의 감시견으로서 민주주의에 일정한 기여를 했다는 평가를 받고 있다. 과연 CBS에 대한 이러한 평가는 정당한 것일까? 특정한 종교의 후원을 받으면서 또한 미국의 영향에서도 완전히 자유롭지 않았던 상대적으로 소규모 매체가 독립 언론의 정체성을 유지할 수 있었던 배경은 무엇일까? 연구자들은 이를 위해 권력의 탄압이 심했던 특정 시기의 보도를 분석하는 한편, CBS 내부자 인터뷰와 관련 자료 분석을 통해 CBS의 독특한 입지를 확인하고자 했다. 태생적 배경, 국제적 연대, 경영인들의 확고한 저널리즘 철학과 리더십 등에 힘입어 언론탄압의 수난까지 감내하며 민주화에 기여해온 CBS의 역사는 언론과 민주주의 역사 및 그 관계를 보여주고 있다. 디지털 뉴스 생태계로 인해 뉴스는 과잉 공급되고 있다. 포털이나 SNS를 통한 뉴스 소비로 인해 저널리즘의 원칙만을 고집하기는 점차 힘들어진다. CBS에 대한 심층분석 결과는 이런 상황에서 언론다움을 지킬 수 있는 조건이 무엇인가를 배울 수 있는 계기가 된다.

The history of journalism in Korean society filled with various types of intervention materialized either by political power or by powerful corporations. Recent development of digital revolution also has negative impact on maintaining journalistic integrity. Korea s Christian Broadcasting System enjoys a favorable reputation as an independent watch-dog news channel though. This paper thus pays particular attention to figure out the truth of journalistic performance, backgrounds and strategies. Two research questions including historical performance in terms of watch-dog function, journalistic strategies for brand power, and structure of decision-making and revenue were visited in this regard. While employing content analysis, it adopts in-depth interviews with those whom have special insights not only in organization but in history and mission as well. The authors hope this study will be helpful for envisioning alternative models successful both in journalism and business.
