Research on the Determinants of the Happiness Track in OECD Countries : With a focus on the Moderating Effects of Happiness Capacities

While the concepts of happiness have long been addressed as critical in new public management (NPM) era, solid evidence of the value shift can also be observed in certain nations where WLB and QOL related programs are actively being adopted in recent years, which aims at cultivating and accelerating the level of happiness. In order to respond to the big question of this study, “what is the main national role to enhance happiness?”, this study is to probe a set of antecedents of happiness of people in OECD countries and to confirm the moderating role of happiness capacities such as psychological and social capital. Using various statistical techniques such as exploratory factor analysis, correlation analysis, and reliability analysis, and multiple hierarchical regression analyses, the study revealed a couple of meaningful relationships between environmental antecedents, happiness capacity moderators, and happiness. Based on the main findings of this study, a set of theoretical and practical implications were provided in order to suggest more sustainable public policies and strategies that could increase social and psychological capital and that could ultimately enhance happiness in OECD countries. The study also delved into the details of future research directions on how to formulate and internalize both positive psychological and social capital in society.
