(Purpose) This study provides information on why universities should deal with SDGs as core task, areas of university SDGs, approaches to roles and cases and tasks. (Design/methodology/approach) This study reviewed the background of university s acceptance and diffusion of SDGs, the opportunity structure of SDGs diffusion, the domain of university SDGs and the effect of university s execution, and the practice cases and implications of SDGs in Chinese and Japanese universities. The study approaches university s acceptance of SDGs from the perspective of active response to macro-structural social change flows. The study carried out literature review and Internet research. (Findings) Many universities around the world are using sustainable development and SDGs as a mechanism for overcoming the university crisis and innovation. This is because SDGs emphasize the principle of multidisciplinary participation and cooperation, and suggestion of specific alternatives and practices. Universities can get the opportunity to establish partnerships with government, industries and communities through SDGs research and education. (Research implications or Originality) This study is the first paper in Korea to attempt to provide a basic understanding of the relationship between a university and SDGs. The academic and practical meaning of this study is, first, the triggering of public debate for the promotion of university SDGs.
