Analysis of the Characteristics of Saemaul Undong in Newspaper Articles from 1970s

(Purpose) This study is intended to consider characteristics of the Saemaul Undong by analyzing news articles from major newspaper on Saemaul Undong, and to seek for desirable direction and implications that Saemaul Undong can contribute. (Design/methodology/approach) As a research method, this study used connection centrality analysis using network text analysis method and LDA topic modeling analysis, and analyzed articles of Chosun Ilbo, Dong-A Daily News, Kyunghyang Shinmun, and Maeil Business Newspaper that used the keyword Saemaul on the title from 1970 to 1979. (Findings) According to our analysis, Saemaul Undong in the 1970s was a successful rural development policy, and showed the characteristics of a well-to-do campaign that public-private partnerships worked together to develop local communities. In order to solve the poverty problem in developing countries, a strategic approach is needed to share Korea s development experience with other developing countries. In addition, it is necessary to develop Saemaul Undong academically and raise public awareness of Global Saemaul Undong. (Research implications or Originality) It would be necessary to emphasize academic research of Saemaul development and effective transfer to developing countries in the future. To this end, a system for training professional manpower of international Saemaul development needs to be strengthened, and accurate understanding and improvement in awareness of people on the value of Saemaul Undong are needed.
