This study aimed at analyzing in- and out-migration characteristics between fundamental local governments in the Chungcheong Region and their counterparts in the Non-Chungcheong Region in Years 2001 and 2008, respectively. It focused on the migration data provided by the Micro Data Service System (MDSS) of Statistics Korea, an official organization for the demographic information in Korea. It adopted social network analysis (SNA) techniques, especially emphasizing visualization works of dynamic population movement. Major findings were as follows: First of all, in terms of in- and out-migration, over the research period, the Chungcheong Region strengthened the interrelationship with the Capital Region. Judging from the migration volumes, the absolute majority of the fundamental local governments in the Capital Region captured thirtieth or better place. In particular, Suwon in Gyeonggi Province repeatedly ranked first in the migration volumes in Years 2001 and 2008, respectively, followed by Gangnam-gu, Songpa-gu, and Gwanak-gu in Seoul Metropolitan City. Within the Chungcheong Region, Cheonan in Chungnam Province presented the largest in- and out-migration volumes with Pyeongtaek, a neighboring town within Kyeonggi Province. Furthermore, this study confirmed the fact that a household unit was the most popular type for the in and out-migration in the Chungcheong Region. Here, the most active out-migrators were initiated by the relatively younger age groups from 10 to 45. In addition, this study evaluated that a handful of government policies, including KTX Railroad Construction Project, exerted significant impact on the migration patterns between the Chungcheong Region and the Capital Region, beyond the location advantages between two Regions.
