A Study on Attitudes toward Death and Demand for Death Preparatory Education Death of the Aged

This study examined how elders perceive the death in the remaining period of lives and whether they demand death preparation training. For this purpose, this study surveyed 184 60-year-old or older elders in West Chungnam(Seoan-si and Taean-gun). The analysis of attitude toward death indicated that gender, age, health condition, and living condition did not affect elders attitude toward death. In addition, elders living with spouse were less fearful than elders living with offspring., but most responders have not had any experiences in death training. Many of them showed intention to participate in death preparation training and preferred professional educational institutions. They demanded various contents of training, including ‘how to decrease fear of death,’ ‘knowledge on preparing wills or inheritance,’ and ‘meaning of death and value of life.’ death preparation training must be offered for any age as a part of lifelong education.
