The Necessity and the Problem of the Ecovillage Network - Focusing on the Case GEN

Nowadays ecovillage movement is one of the most important social movements which seek after alternative society. But the success of this movement depends not only upon the establishing a model of green life-style, but also upon the construction of the network among the local ecovillages. In relation to this problematic, this paper attempts to examine the necessity and the problems of the ecovillage network. In chapter II, we try to define the ecovillage network and discuss the necessity of its development on a global scale. In chapter III, focusing on the case GEN (Global Ecovillage Network), this study examines the present state of ecovillage network. The main objectives of study here are the development of membership, organization, history and the activities of GEN . The latter half of this article will examine and attempt to explain some organizational, financial problems related to ecovillage network movement and its relationship to the other new social movements. Especially, concerning organizational problems, the study attempts to show the limits of ecovillage movement which is in reality uncommunicative with the outside . As a conclusion, this study suggests that ecovillage movement should overcome the too diffusive, self-reliant management, if it wants to be a genuine alternative social movement in the times of environmental crisis.
