A Case Study of the RIS in England - with a particular reference to Cambridge Technopole

This paper explores to analyze the relationships among the major stake-holders involved in the operation of Regional Innovation System, with a particular reference to Cambridge Technopole in the UK and to put forward some policy directions to regional policy makers in Korea at central and local level as well. In doing so, it explains why the Cambridge Technopole has been quite often benchmarked by other countries and what factors have mainly contributed to its success. Rather than simply describing the role and performance of particular actors, institutions and policies, this article deals with system-level characteristics, including the distribution of the activities within the system, the organisational boundaries around them, coordination mechanisms, evolutionary process, and the effectiveness of the system in introducing, diffusing and exploiting technological innovations, and conclusively suggests some practical ideas for Korean policy makers to be able to activate the RISs which are at an infant stage.
