A Comparative Study on English and Korean Negative Polarity Items

The purpose of this paper is to check the types and features of Negative Polarity Items(NPIs) in English and Korean. English NPIs occur in the various contexts compared to Korean NPIs. ‘Amwu-ra-to’ and ‘amwu-na’ which are the counterparts of English ‘any’ can be interpreted to have both polarity sensitive reading and free choice reading in the same context. The interpretive theory of sentence negation is proposed in this paper. The study finds some types of interrogative sentences hosting NPIs, as well as antecedents of conditional sentences, complements of ‘adversative’ predicates such as forbid, doubt, dislike, etc. This paper fails to provide detailed directions for various aspects of complex negatives. That direction will be sought in subsequent research.
