문학상의 새로운 진화와 ‘젊은작가상’

A New Evolution of Literary Awards and the ‘Young Writer’s Award’: Focused on Institutional Aspects of the ‘Young Writer’s Award’(2010-2020)

연구는 ‘문학동네’가 주관하는 ‘젊은작가상’을 중심으로 문학상 운영의 실태와문학상 제도의 허와 실을 실증적으로 분석하여 문학상이 가지는 함의와 실효를 비판적으로 분석한 것이다. ‘젊은작가상’은 젊은 작가들을 널리 알리자는 취지로 2010년에 제정된 문학상으로서 올해 11년 주기를 맞았다. 짧은 기간에도 불구하고 ‘젊은작가상’은 명실상부 한국문학계의 중심적인 자리에서 신예작가들을 조명하고 소개하는 문학상으로 자리 잡았다. 이는 ‘창비’, ‘문학과지성사’의 양대 체제에 뒤늦게 뛰어들어 성공적으로 안착한 ‘문학동네’의 위상과 영향력, 그리고 ‘문학동네’가 취해온 출판상업주의 전략을 압축적으로 보여준다. 1990년대 한국문학 내 ‘문학동네’ 등장이 어떠한 영향을 끼쳤는가, 문학동네가 추구하는 지향성인 ‘순수문학주의’가 어떠한 파급을 낳았는가와 관련하여 다수의 연구물이 집적되고 있다. 그러나 대개 ‘문학동네’가 등장한 90년대 혹은 ‘문학권력’에 관한 논의가 본격적으로 진행된 2000년대 초반에만 초점을 맞춰 논의가 집중되어 있다. 또한 ‘문학동네’가 실질적으로 한국 문학계에 어떠한 영향력을 끼쳤는지에 대한분석, 곧 정확한 자료를 기반하여 실증적으로 분석한 연구는 아직까지 전무한 실정이다. 이에 본고는 2010년대 이후 ‘젊은작가상’ 제도를 실증적으로 검토하고 분석함으로써 2000년대 초반 논쟁 이후의 논의를 연장하고 그 현재적 의미를 도출하고자한다.

This study empirically analyzed the truth and falsity of the literary award system and the current literary award management conditions, focusing on the “Young Writer’s Award” managed by the Munhakdongne Publishing Company, and it critically analyzed the implications and actual effects of literary awards in Korean literature. The “Young Writer’s Award” is a literary award established in 2010 to provide publicity for young writers, and this year will be its 11th anniversary. Despite its short period, the “Young Writer’s Award” is worthy of its name and has become a literary award that examines and introduces new writers to the center of the Korean literary world. This compressively displays the status and influence of the “Munhakdongne,” which has successfully settled after entering the field alongside two major companies, “Changbi Publishers” and “Moonji Publishing Company,” along with the strategies for publishing commercialism that Munhakdongne has chosen. With regard to the effects of the appearance of “Munhakdongne” within the Korean literature of the 1990s and the influence of “pure literature principles,” which are the directionality pursued by Munhakdongne, numerous studies are accumulating. However, most discussions focus on the 1990s when “Munhakdongne” appeared or the early 2000s when discussions on “literary authority” began in earnest. In addition, no study has conducted an empirical analysis (in other words, accurate data) on the effects of “Munhakdongne” in the Korean literary world. In light of this, this present study attempted to empirically examine and analyze the Young Writer’s Award system after the 2010s to extend discussions from the early 2000s and deduce any present significance.
