영국의 블렌딩(Blending) 홍차는 중국차를 기반으로 상류사회에서 시작되었다. 나아가 자국의 식민지였던 인도와 스리랑카에서 19세기에 홍차의 대량생산이 이루어지면서 블렌딩 역시 대중화되었다. 19세기 영국에서 활용된 블렌딩용 차의 원산지는 중국, 일본, 인도, 실론 및 자바였다. 차의 종류는 이들 지역에서 생산되는 녹차와 홍차가 주류였으며, 각각의 산지에서 생산되는 원료용 차에는 저마다의 등급이 매겨졌다. 영국의 블렌딩 홍차는 일반적으로 품종, 등급 및 성격이 서로 다른 차를 3개에서 5개 정도 혼합하여 얻어졌다. 이렇게 시작된 19세기 영국 홍차 블렌딩은 영국식 블렌딩, 산지에 따른 블렌딩, 수질에 따른 블렌딩, 가격에 따른 블렌딩으로 분류됐다. 영국식 블렌딩은 19세기 영국에서 유행하던 다양한 홍차 블렌딩 기법의 총칭이라고 할 수 있다. 또한 인도 등 중국 이외의 지역에서 차 재배와 생산이 가능해지면서 산지에 따른 블렌딩 기법이 개발되고 발전하였다. 이어 소비자들이 사용하는 수질을 고려한 블렌딩 기법도 창안되고 발전하였으며, 차의 품질에 따라 가격대도 차별화되어 블렌딩되었다. 이러한 블렌딩 기법의 창안과 발전은 영국 홍차 산업의 세계화를 앞당겼으며, 지금까지 영국은 세계 최고의 홍차 산업국으로서의 위상을 지키고 있다.

As for the types of tea, green tea and black tea produced in these regions were the mainstream, and teas for raw materials produced in each production area were individually graded. The blending of British black tea in the 19th century, which began in this way, was classified into English blending, blending according to production area, blending according to water quality, and blending according to price. British blending is a generic term for various black tea blending techniques that were popular in England in the 19th century. In addition, as tea cultivation and production became possible in regions other than China such as India, blending techniques were developed according to production areas. Then, blending techniques considering the water quality used by consumers were invented, and the price range was differentiated according to the quality of the tea. The creation and development of these blending techniques have accelerated the globalization of the British tea industry, and so far Britain has maintained its status as the world s leading tea industry.
