Encounter of History and Climate - Writing Climate History of Human Geological Force

본 논문은 지구가 뜨거워지는 만큼 뜨거운 기대와 관심을 받고 있는 기후사의 현주소를 유럽 소빙하기 연구서들을 중심으로 살펴본다. 1990년대 이후 기후사가 관심의 축을 자연적 기후로부터 인간과 사회의 취약성과 적응성으로 뚜렷이 옮겨오게 된 것은 지질연대 개념을 넘어서 하나의 문화적 개념으로 거듭난 인류세의 직관적인 호소력과 영향력 하에서였다. 인류세의 향방이 이미 지질적 힘이 되어버린 인류의 선택과 행동에 전적으로 달려있게 되었다는 점에서 이러한 기후사 축의 변화는 매우 중요한 전환이다. 기후변화의 미래를 준비하는 데 중요한 것은 기후과학적 지식이 아니라 기후변화에 창의적으로 적응하는 데 도움이 되거나 걸림돌이 될 수 있는 인간의 사회문화적 요인들에 대한 깊은 이해이다. 본 논문은 가장 화제가 된 3권의 소빙기 연구서를 통해 이러한 기후사 서술의 축의 전환을 살펴보면서, 기후사의 서술적 진화에 가장 큰 걸림돌이 되어왔던 기후결정론적 시각을 극복하고 기후와 인간의 역동적 되먹임 관계를 서술하는 다양한 방식을 논의해본다.

This paper visits the current address of climate history, which draws attentions to and expectations with the rising agenda of climate change. Under the Anthropocene’s intuitive appeal, climate history has gone through a transition, shifting its focus from natural climate towards a human-climate dynamic, i.e. vulnerability and adaptation of human beings and societies. This humanistic turn of climate history is significant, because the future of the Anthropocene totally depends on the human hands as a geological force. In preparing for the future of climate change, it is getting more and more important to deeply understand human society and culture, which could facilitate or hinder a creative adaptation to climate change. The biggest challenge of climate history writing has been shaking off the climate determinism. This paper reviews three outstanding books of climate history in order to discuss this problem: Geoffrey Parker’s Global Crisis (2013), John Brooke’s Climate Change and the Course of Global History (2014), and Wolfgang Behringer’s Kulturgeschichte des Klimas (2006). These three books are demonstrating three different paths to overcome climate determinism and to explore a future-oriented paradigm of historiography for the Anthropocene epoch.
